I've heard both stories and seen that toy, and I must say that until I hear someone sounding like that thru a cardboard tube, I'll prefer the toy story (p.n.i). It just sounds more correct, no matter what te source. (Choco, can you put a sample of you mooing online somewhere?)

<It was a toy, I had one when I was a kid. It's a tube of cardboard, sealed at both ends with small holes to let air pass>

I know those things, I had one as a kid too and a horn playing friend of mine pulls one out on gigs for a quick laugh & to bug the singer..

My vote for the signature Black Ark moo still goes to the human voice theory. It sounds to me like a human mooing. I am 100% sure of it.

This is a case for Sherlock Holmes!

Is this enough of a Black Ark tribute for you guys?:

http://www.twilightcircus.com/jukebox/index.html

Check 'Phase Anansi' MP3 in the jukebox

Human voice moo performed by yours truly in the style of Watty Burnett avec l'roll de toilet papair.

Note - It is an ark tribute 4 real..the Black Arkisms were done on purpose, for a bit of fun, in tribute to the BA..

Moo?

Didn't actually hear any mooing on that track, but it was dope nonethteless. And yes, I do favour the human beatbox theory of Black Ark bovine sound effects.

The mooing is so low in the mix that it's not really possible to compare... Tuff track, anyway.

No, wait a minute, there was one that was louder!

...

No, I'm not convinced yet.

Choc - a wicked track but that cow needs to be beefed up some
I think you've pretty much got it and I've tried one of those cow toys and they just don't cut it, the sound is too "thin".

The "cow" sound can also be heard in one track from Train To Zion LP by Linval thompson & Friends; maybe has it "sampled" since it has no link with Mr Perry ?

From what I know, its the tube/mike combo, but the mike is at the bottom of a metal rubbish bin and he added a tiny bit of delay and a fair bit of reverb. Its easier with a cow, especially here in Swtizerland...
Hope this helps,
