I always held the Channel One cut of Far East to be his first cut of that particular tune.

Recently someone went lenghts to prove that the Studio One cut was actually recorded first.

So my simple question is then, when the Studio One Cut was actually recorded and when it saw its initial release.

Yep you're right, as far as I know the Studio 1 version was the later cut...

The original version of this rhythm was the Studio 1 cut.

I think Lars is referring specifically to the 2 Barry Brown versions. According to RKR his version on Channel 1 was released in '80 and his version on Studio 1 came out in '88, although whether the Studio 1 cut was recorded in the 70's but not released until '88 I don't know.....but I'm sure someone does.....

Sorry about the mix up.

Barry's Channel 1 version was released before his Studio 1 version.

The backing track by The Soul Vendors on the Studio 1 single pre-dates the Channel 1.

I have no idea when Barry voiced the Studio 1 version, but I'd guess it was around the late 80's.

Like you say Ian, I'm sure someone will tell us!

Maybe we'll never get to know the truth that but I Channel One cut was out much before Studio 1 cut. That's a fact, everything else is speculation, because the singer/producer are not here anymore.

The Channel One cut wins over the Studio First cut in my book. Albeit a Dodd riddim, Channel One really polished it as the classic we recognise these days.

A check of all Barry Brown's Studio 1 output indicates their were only four tracks released in total, probably voiced around the same time he recorded 'Give Love' in the the early 80's. I remember checking the matrix on the Studio 1 single 'Far East' and noting it was (SO 1989 A ) and that corresponded with the year of issue, 1989! Coincidence or what?

If all four songs were voiced at the same time this would indicate Coxsone held release back by a number of years (no surprises there) but as JV already pointed out, it's just speculation.

Yes Jackie, the Studio 1 LP that was put out by Dodd does contain some weak tracks.

Gotta admit you've lost me there Dadi!

What Studio 1 LP do you mean?

From what I discovered there was not enough material for an LP, and the two songs I know are anything but weak.

Lars, in your first post you wrote...

"Recently someone went lenghts to prove that the Studio One cut was actually recorded first"

I'd be interested to know what they said that convinced them the Studio 1 tune was recorded first.

Cheers

The full length Studio 1 LP "Roots & Culture"
That's been available a couple of years. Very enjoyable LP imho.
