New box set acquisitions

Postby Chocolate Soldier » Wed Dec 29, 2004 8:04 pm

Obtained from 'the Bay' this month - some box sets I had my eye on for years but was not down with paying full shop prices at the time.
Most new & shrinkwrapped for a fraction of das neue price:

Lee Perry - Arkology / verdict: didn't thrill me
Stax singles box 1959-1968 / verdict: ESSENTIAL..holey cow!
Motown hitsville USA singles 1959-1971 / verdict: how did I do without?
Smithsonian Anthology of American Folk Music / verdict: hard for me not to think of a Klansmen barbeque when I hear it, sorry can't help it..
good musicology study material though..

Agreed Choco, now get vol 2, 1968-1971!

There's a third volume covering 1972 to 1975, while it has it's moments, it's not as essential as the first two sets.

- Lee Perry - Arkology > it's a great collection for beginners, was a mind opener for me, when it came out.

- Stax singles box 1959-1968 > Essential You will need Vol.2 too, but you can live without Vol.3

- Motown hitsville USA singles 1959-1971 > Excellent! You should check out Vol.2, the decline is depressing, but I've heard you like the doom laden stuff

The Harry Smith Anthology is great music beautifully put together. I owned my copy for several years before becoming obsessed earlier this year when I listened to a pruned (the Social Music disc is least essential IMO) 2-cassette version most every night.

Yeah...I had the same response BMC, that Arkology set was a major revelation to me when it first came out, and a big stepping stone in the growth of my reggae collection...still I guess for longer time reggae listeners who already know a lot of this stuff maybe not so crucial...

i found the material on arkology to be great but the mastering is crappy on at least some of the stuff. too bad too. still, its worth a listen even if you have most of it already (i did but still its nice to have it in one place). and of course the artwork and notes are nice too.

one love
