Leeds Record Shops

Postby Anonymous » Tue Nov 30, 2004 1:13 pm

I know this was mentioned on the old board, but seeing as the archives aren't up yet then I'll ask again :D

What decent record shops are there in Leeds for reggae? I'm particularly after repress 7"s and CDs.

I've currently got plans for Saturday afternoon but the voices in my head tell me that they're going to fall through.......

So, if they do I'm going record shopping for a couple of hours! :D

Gordon,

the essential one is called Tribe and is right next to the Corn Exchange.

there's a new shop in the grand arcade (where polar bear used to be) that has some nice selections- mainly 2nd hand, but also some new obscurities

Gord - My wife went to college in Leeds so spent much time there. Reggae shopping highlights were:

~ Sir Yanks - Don't know if the ole fellas still going, but used to have a 'shop' in his garage out towards Sheepscar.

~ Jumbo Records - In the St. John's shopping centre, as mentioned above.

~ Merrion Centre - Used to be a 2nd hand shop / stall out the back of said shopping complex.

~ Another shop - walk down the Headrow (towards the Corn Exchange), turn left in front of the Odeon Cinema & it's on the left-hand side of the road.

Could be out of date info. - haven't been to Leeds for 5 years or so.

Good shopping.

Ekki - Jumbo records is still there and it has a decent selection of vinyl, both old and new and of all sizes - though the CD section looks a bit like the HMV & Virgin stores here in the UK.

Matt B - the new shop in Grand Arcade is owned by some of the people who used to run Polar Bear. But they switched (almost) exclusively to vinyl because it's their passion and - unlike CDs! - sales are on the up. The place is now called Soul Alley, and reggae is only a small part of their business. The LPs & 12" singles are fine, but I didn't recognise anything in the box of 7s they enthusiastically pushed my way (maybe I'm just old?) They do have a website but I don't know the URL exactly - just key the name into Google and it will probably come up.

And you can add my name to the recommendations for Tribe.

Gordon - If there's enough time, you should visit all three of the above. Whenever I do that, it's weird how I find something in each one, but there's very little overlap in their stock.

dubac- yep, the 7"s are toss :0

tribe's by far the best and they have a nice soundsystem, which helps (unless the drum'n'bass kids are in and going mental to dull techstep).

crash on the headrow sometimes has stuff the others don't, but it doesn't specialise in reggae.

there's also a second hand record shop near richer sounds which is ok, but nothing special

You've gotta include the file extension of the picture - for instance:
