Stong Like Samson (Linval Thompson In Dub)Sam

Postby wareika » Mon Dec 13, 2004 8:34 pm

Hi

I have received today this dub set. It is on Thompson Sounds Label, from 79 with no cover. It has "made in Ja" on the label but I'm quite certain it is actualy an US press.

Tunes are:

Side 1
1 Samson (L Thompson tune with "I never run, I never Hide" on the lyrics. A tune I Know but can't remember)
2 Danger Dub (Danger In Your Eyes riddim)
3 African Rock
4 Wicked Dub
5 Fisha Man Dub (a dub with "the wicked can't escape this jugment in this time" lyrics)

Side 2
1 Gun Man Dub (Diamonds riddim)
2 Reggae 79 Rock (a dub with only the word "by" heavy echoed in the mix)
3 Rastafari Dub (a dub with "Oh Jah" echoed and the word "judgement" shouted by a man)
4 Concorde Rock (Diamonds riddim again / dub to Dawn & Christine "Holly Mount Zion")
5 Jam Down Rock (dub to L Thompsn's "If I Folow My Heart")

There is a pic of the label at:

http://members.shaw.ca/dublp2/pic125.html

I only listened very quickly to the set to check the tune or riddim I can recognise straight. The set sound good, Revolutionaries material and perhaps a Scientist mixed set?

Anyone have infos about this set? Any info much apreciated.

Thanx Jah Bill, for this lighting fast answer.

I don't have the Thompson's GRED, but I have the tune somewhere. Will find it.
I've got the Mystic Eyes LP and I the "Oh Jah" ring a bell. Will listen to it right now.

BTW, it is possible that some tune appeared on others dub sets, like you suggest for the "Reggae 79 Rock" tune.

2 Reggae 79 Rock (a dub with only the word "by" heavy echoed in the mix)

Is a dub to Mystic Eyes' "Must Eat Bread". You pointed a good source Jah Bill.

This set looks very similar to The Revolutionaries "Outlaw Dub" on Trojan - think it is the same set with different track order :

Would have to check to confirm...

That Mystic Eyes album would have been a killer had it been properly recorded. Now it sounds miserable maybe due to a broken microphone used recording the album. Sounds very distorted and fuzzy - I don't think it's any mastering issue just a bad recording. There's also another Linval Thompson album - (iirc Rockers Vibration on some Burning sounds label) which has the same annoying effect.
I think that recording error is one of the reasons it has never been re-issued, while Linval's production career is very well covered otherwise.

Thanx for solving this question about the "Strong Like Samson" LP. This dub has some strong riddims and the mixing is good but far from killer IMO. BTW, does anyone know which tune, produced by Linval, use the Danger In Your Eyes riddim?

Regarding the Mystic Eyes LP, I totaly agree with JV. It is a killer set regarding the music but the poor sound quality ruins it. To be honnest I don't listen to it that often.

Tim P, it is certainly the one you present. The label look like a late 70's one... Does it appear on an LP?
