There's usually very little reggae at the ones here as well, fortunately a couple of years ago I happened across a seller who seemed to always have a few interesting reggae items. Got to know him a little better through meeting up at the record shows and he's now passed hundreds of records my way that I would never have come across on my own 8)

I never pay the early bird fee either though I do try to hit the shows soon after opening to minimize chances of anything good getting picked over! Last year Mark T and I just arrived at a show and minutes later I walked by a guy with a Congos LP in his pile  Fortunately I snagged the same album at this past show however so it all worked out!

Nice haul shadrach. How is the General Plough Showcase album? I picked up the Midnight Rock LP on Clappers a while back and remember that besides from the title track, not being blown away. Maybe I need to give it another spin.

Recently picked up these few records for just a little over $30

Black Uhuru - Fit You Haffe Fit (Taxi 12") Been wanting this one for a while now
Ossie Henry - You No See Nothing Yet (Paradis 12")
Sammy Levi - You're As Light As Rain (Brand X 12")

jps; The General Plough is a is a lovely set. Obviously mixed for sound system play. Very heavy, sparse and ruff mixes. The cut of Midnight Rock on the Showcase LP does unfortunately not have as a nice rhythm as the Clappers cut – had the Midnight Rock LP had the same mix with dub it would have been something else – but it is still a very nice rhythm albeit on a major chord rhythm for the dismay of any minor chord monkey (singular form because you know who you are...). The first song on the A-side was also released as a 12" titled »Golden Chalice« and some of the rhythms were used for other songs released as discos on the Cash Bound label – if you have (heard) them. The album is marred by some cutting errors though. One song speeds up a bit halfway in for no reason.

You can hear two of the songs here:

Unfortunately the rips really don't do the music justice. Been having some problems with my set up.

The General Plough Showcase LP is excellent. My favorite track is "Feeling of Love" (untitled B-5 I think) which is on a wonderful rhythm also featured on a Clair pre-release 12" with DJ Santana. I'd love to know if there's a dub on the Clair 12" because there isn't one on the LP.

Never noticed the pitch problem Kalcidis mentions (or more likely just forgot about it) but all copies surely must have it. Of note to Canadian reggae fans, the Josey Wales cut on the flip of the Golden Chalice 12" features the same cut of Darker Shade of Black as Jimmy Roots - Slave Driver! Unfortunately the dub is really more of an instrumental. Golden Chalice meanwhile shares the same version of Answer as George Nooks - Criticise (All Sport 7" and Lightning 12").

Yes minidub, I've have been enjoying this record. And when I first came across it, I figured it was a late 80's record since I didn't look at it closely and the label design is the same as the Amerijam records I have. Was pleasantly surprised when I first dropped the needle though.

Thanks for the feed back Kalcidis and Billy. Good to know the showcase album is nice. I believe it goes for a good bit though. I like that version of the Midnight Rock track, but I definitely do still prefer the version on the Clappers LP. Would love to know if there is a dub version of the Clappers cut.

Along with the Ital Dokta got a third crack at a reggae collection being sold off and this time got to look at some old 7"s. Among the records I picked out were:

Dennis Brown & Dhaima - A True - Joe Gibbs
Dennis Brown - I Hope We Get To Love In Time - Errol T
Freddie McGregor - Mark of the Beast - Soul Syndicate
Dr. Alimantado - Oil Crisis/Have No Fear - Ital

along with some burning Rockers 12" Linval Thompson/Pablo Gad/Delroy Wilson

Feeling well pleased and satisfied.

Hey JPS,

I have not been able to visit the board for some weeks, hence my late response!
As some others baffers already indicated, that Plough album is definitely worth checking, some excellent tunes and dubs included!
Personally I never noticed any pitch problems, will have to check that out.
Cheers,
Shadrach.

Here's my 2nd and 3rd cracks at the private collection, bought over a couple of trips over the past month or so. Prices averaged out were about $10-$15 each, many of these are in excellent or near mint condition, apparently the previous owner (a local celebrity/media personality) was buying a lot of records as they came out and occasionally didn't even get to listening to them so several LP's came still sealed and many others look like they have been played very lightly if at all:

7"

Bunny Lara & 7th Extension - What We Need Is Love / Zodiac
Slickers - St. Jago de la Vega / Afrik
Judy Mowatt - Slave Queen / Ashandan
Prince Fari & Culture - Message From the KIng / Cry Tuff
Twinkle Brothers - Free Africa / Northcoast
Dennis Alcapone - 1/2 Million Dollars / High Note
Errol Scorcher - Dance All Style / Scorcher

12"

Donovan Drummond - Easy / Natty & Bald Head / Black Heat

The Rastafarians - Orthodox
Gemini Brass - Keep On the Right Side / Gemini
V / A - Shining Stars A Reggae Encounter / Joe Gibbs
Leroy Smart - Jah Loves Everyone / Burning Sounds
