Lee Perry - Back On The Controls

Postby Mick Sleeper » Wed Apr 02, 2014 3:48 am

Got my first listen to Back On The Controls, Lee Perry's new album with UK producer Daniel Boyle, and it's stunning. I've become fairly jaded over Scratch's modern works, but this one really stands out. Instead of triple-tracked vocals over weak rhythms and Scratch talking about his cock, his vocals are focused and lucid, the vibe is solid roots, and the music is very well-crafted. An amazing album that instantly ranks among Scratch's finest works. Even for those of you who gave up on Lee Perry years ago, Back On The Controls is very special. Don't miss it!

it is indeed very good
I supported the kickstarter campaign out of sheer principle, and Im glad the artistic result turned out to be so good
I havent heard a good Lee Perry album like this one since the Time Boom X Devil Dead.

I also rate this new album very high, but cannot agree with Mick's opinion about "modern" Scratch
production. In my eyes this record is a kinda of continuation of The Mighty Upsetter recorded with Sherwood..and
I also see the records as Rise again (w Bill Laswell), Humanicity (w. ERM), Scratch Came Scratch Saw Scratch Conquered,
Panic in a Babylon (w. WBR), The End Of An American Dream - if i focus only on production after the Year 2000 -
as a crucial musical reflection of the times we are living. just my humble opininon...

Daniel Boyle is also responsible for a fiery new roots 7" on Tuff Scout - I'm Alive by Danny Red.

I also hold Panic In Babylon in high esteem.

One more thing: When Rise Again was released in 2011, I passed because it was CD only and I was moving away from that format. Space Monkey's post reminded me of this Bill Laswell production so I checked the M.O.D. website, and indeed it was pressed on double vinyl in 2013. Just ordered a copy. So now I have two double vinyl releases to enjoy shortly. 2014 will be the Summer of Scratch! :D

P.S. if anybody involved with Humanicity is reading this board, please put out a vinyl edition. It's the right thing to do.
