Psychedelic Roots: a fine example....

Postby j j » Fri Apr 04, 2014 1:50 am

Psychedelic roots is a term I use to describe those mixes where the engineer/producer really goes 'out there' with the weirdness factor in the mix, past the usual echo & reverb etc found in a normal dub mix but to somewhere approaching an acid flashback or something equally unsettling ? :D
I class Perry's tune 'Return of the Super Ape' as psychedelic roots number & after finally having some time to listen to some tunes I will add Jah I Maz & Baba Leslie's Lloyd Barnes produced 'Freedom Is A Must/Freedom Dub' on Wackies/DKR 7" to this genre

Do you have a favourite where the mix goes into extra weird Deep Dub Dimensions :!:   :?

The most obvious one to me would be the well known classic:

There's an Augustus Pablo reissue with a psychedelic version on the flip entitled Dub 4 where Pablo completely deconstructs the rhythm. I forget which rhythm it is, will try and remember to dig it out.

Darkest Night by Keith Hudson. not the dub mix in particular but the whole atmospheric thing as such.

The dub version on the flip of Pauline's »Me & My Dread« (1 Lion 12") which is called »Revelation« is pretty fantastic and I would definitely say psychedelic. Heavy roots.

That's a great song, Roots Tradition. I wonder if it's the same Equators that recorded that niceish France-only roots album called Spécial Reggae under the guise of Mosiah.

Some of the Lee Perry 12 inches are a bit spaced.

What about LSD by Trinity from Trinity Meet The Mighty Diamonds

Highly likely kalcidis. The Mosiah release on Tonpress is credited to J. Bailey and I believe the brothers who founded The Equators were called Bailey.

Cool. Never made the connection. But then again often it feels that I wouldn't be able to discern Roots Radics from AC/DC.

yes the mix on Words 12 is amazing, always would of preferred it without the toast.
Its a Psychedelic masterpeice.

Also thought Horace Andys "Dancehall Style" was very spaced out

earth roots and water & bumpy jones - reggae in C minor. Like someone had an LSD trip during the recording session.. However it's a really really nice/good tune.

Great thread, love this sound.

If you have 4 mins heres my own offering to this sound, track called Dub for Alicia, a friend who sadly died at the way too young age of 27 - i recorded this just a few days after the fact... expresses the feelings i had at that moment in time. Starts off relatively straight and sentimental but...
