Sly & Robbie + Groucho = new album

Postby guillaumebougard » Wed Mar 26, 2014 10:14 am

Paul "Groucho" Smykle has just finished mixing a new dub project by Sly & Robbie. We are pleased.

I'm awaiting the hard drive to go to the mastering studio, and at the same time looking for a badass artwork designer to do a post-apocalypse-good-vs-evil-final-armageddeon-in-Kingston-year-2230 type of illustration.

The 8 track album will be released as a 33RPM LP with possibly a double disco 45 limited edition. Then we'll do a digital release and we might do a CD later on. Don't ask me for a release date yet.

Tracks used for this are:

1. Chezidek - No Surrender
2. Chezidek - Devil Cant Bully Me Out
3. Horace Andy - Zion Gate
4. Horace Andy - King of Kings
5. Horace Andy - Holy Mount Zion
6. Horace Andy - True Rastaman
7. Bunny Rugs - Rumours
8. Khalifa - Accused

Couldn't Groucho also fill the spot of the badass artwork designer?

eight tracks is sort of slim for an LP not to mention a CD...unless there are very extended versions which it doesn't sound like is the case here. I vote for releasing 2 12" disco singles with four songs @ 45 rpm on each if they are normal (approx. 3 minute) length cuts.

8 tracks about 4:30 each, 37 minutes long.
they very frequently used to release albums of that length back in the 70's, and nobody complained

again economixxx are going to be a factor between 33 RPM single LP and double 45RPM 12". The pressing costs are just sooooooo high compared to just a few years ago, and printing on good quality heavy duty cardboard that doesnt slip at the seams is obscene.

that's on the cost side

on the revenue side: how much are customers willing to pay? And how many of those are there anyway???

right. how do you know "nobody complained"? especially in the eighties when they were xferred verbatim to CD without bonus tracks to make them a decent length.

that said, you are right, 37 minutes is and was a decent, pretty much optimal length for an LP considering the space a decent groove needs to hold dynamic range...an equation some like Jamaican Recordings and Kingston Sounds have yet to learn.

thanks for the info and I will be on the lookout when it arrives

used to have plenty albums with 8 tracks and never thought about it that way..
Chezidek TAXI album got about 20 crucial tracks vocs+dubs and no one even notice that album (5 years ago)..
music is art, its not something you will buy for the amount of tracks...
I can also remember buying albums just for the 1 track, that was before soulseek and napster..

The Chezidek album is one of my biggest disappointments in terms of unmet expectations. Sales were freaking dismal which I didn't understand because here in France, I did some heavy duty promotion, advertising, etc... Musically I was under the impression it held its own against other releases that year and other records by the artist, but nothing, absolutely nothing happened. The only thing I can say is that I sent 20 advance promo copies to press here and one of these guys thought nothing better than have it published on a pirate site in Brazil before the official release date. Since then, no more promo copies...

I like the Chezidek set, was listening to it just the other day. Who start and Borderline are among the artist's best. Who start (the war) -linked above- is a modern classic.
