7"s that play better than the 12"

Postby james19 » Wed Mar 26, 2014 11:20 am

For whatever reason, the depth, level of bass, clarity of the tune, press quality....

Here's a few off the top of my head:

Pinchers - Grammy (Vena 7")....sound is a lot bolder than the Original Sounds 12".
Earl Cunningham - Words of the Father (DEB 7")....there isn't much in it to be honest, but the bass just sounds nicer on the 7".
Frankie Paul - Gun Shot (Skengdon 7")....this may not qualify as it is a slightly different mix. Was always in favour of the 12" but now much prefer the 7".

Any others that spring to mind?

I have heard on this forum before that The Ark-"Forgive I"-Ark Sound 7" is preferred to the 12". I haven't heard the 12". But I was happy to hear this as I was fortunate enough to find the 7" a while back, which I am happy with. Can anyone comment on the difference?

Another springs to mind.

Black Oney - Jah Jah Send The Parson. Came on a thin sounding US pressing 33RPM EP which doesn't sound half as good. The 7" is the daddy.

bit of an exaggeration here, the 12" sounds totally fine. 7" & 12" are two different mixes. i think the 7" mix is preferable but that's a matter of opinion of course.
likewise the "gun shot" 12" also sounds totally fine, is just a diff. mix as you said.

re: the Ark
the 12" has bad mastering on the b-side, the sound if muffled and a little distorted. by no means unlistenable, but definitely something went wrong. the a-side is fine. anyway this is why people often prefer the 7".
