records stores in San Francisco

Postby gunkie » Fri Feb 21, 2014 11:10 am

I'm heading to San Francisco next week for a conference. Any recommendations on record stores to check out? I'm mostly looking for original press roots/dub from 70s/80s. Thanks

Amoeba Records should definitely be on your list, it's legendary. However, if you're only looking for original presses, you might be disappointed.

There are a ton of good record shops in the City, particularly in the Haight-Ashbury area. Amoeba is there as Mick mentioned (definitely the largest) and a half dozen or so other smaller shops. Unfortunately scoring any original stuff will be tough, but I've had a bit of luck at some of the "boutique" shops. You could easily make an afternoon of checkin 'em all out.

If you're in the East Bay, Berkeley's Telegraph Ave. area is like a smaller version of the Haight-Ashbury ("vintage" clothes, head shops, and record shops).

One of my favorite record stores in SF is called Explorist, in the Mission. It's small but just a wonderful selection of jazz, folk, world, some reggae. It's one of those shops where everything is handpicked and in great taste- I usually walk out thinking I could have bought practically the entire store.

Enjoy your time in SF, and remember to always pay your parking meter! (In fact, utilize BART when practicable, driving can be a nightmare).

Hey gunkie,

You wont have much luck for OG JA press in the stores around the bay. I'm mostly an online vendor, but I'm based in the bay area and often meet people in SF coffee shops to sell reggae. If you'll be around next weekend I can bring a box up (~150 records) and meet you. Otherwise you can come to my part of the peninsula (45min south of SF) and browse the whole lot of for sale records (~500). Check my site - www.davesjukebox.net - for a peek at the selection.

Cheers,
Dave

I wouldn't get my hopes up for Amoeba, as far as reggae. Last few times I've been it's mostly just stock from Ernie B. Great store otherwise, though

If you can't find a good record shop in SF, you could read a good book about one instead, Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon:
