Wayne Smith R.I.P

Postby Ruffneck » Mon Feb 17, 2014 11:20 pm

Shocking news from the Sleng Teng Man's own facebook timeline:

"It really is with a heavy heart that I post this in memory of My friend,
Recording LEGEND Wayne Sleng Teng Smith who died today in Jamaica of a heart attack ,,,,"

Confirmed by Wayne's niece on the same page so sadly it seems to be true... just turned 48, way too young to go!

R.I.P, you changed dancehall music!!

Shocking....and very saddening.

RIP Sleng Teng Man!

This was certainly one of his slickest tunes - a personal fave of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qns75Ovc-10

His 1985 recording of "(Under Me) Sleng Teng", is generally regarded as the beginning of ragga style reggae. The rhythm was created on a Casio MT-40 and is based on the riff from Eddie Cochran's "Somethin' Else".

...And wikipedia lies. This is not "Sleng Teng" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ2icEdmgI8

The riff has more similarities with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS8GP3SAaPY and this riddim has nothing to do with "Sleng Teng"

excellent in depth interview with Wayne here: http://unitedreggae.com/articles/n574/0 ... xFEWc.dpuf
-including the fall out he had to face for Sleng Teng...

Before that most big rhythms in the dancehall were old Studio 1 like Never Let Go and Mad Mad. It must feel good to have created an original one as big as them.

Yeah man but in those days I got enough fight! Almost every day on the radio in Jamaica they used to say, “The Likkle bwoy with the name Wayne Smith come with the likkle digital ting deh. Inna one minute it ago done!” Then he’d come again, “In the space of two years it ago done!” and then “In space of three years it ago done!” Then they’d say, “Wayne Smith in a one instant he want kill live music yunno! Computer drum! Computer bass! That bwoy deh!” (laughs) They used to talk bad ‘bout me! They wanted to grab me and beat me in those times!

Ernest Hookim said it killed Channel One. Were you sad about that?

It slowed down everything for everyone else yeah. I just see it as something new came and you have to just get with it or not. That’s what life is like.

Very sad news, loss of another great singer and music innovator

BTW Roman
The Casio MT-40 preset which Sleng Teng slows down and builds on - was derived from Something Else by Eddie Cochran.
I had one myself in the early 80s and it was pretty obvious then that it was the song the preset was derived from .
