Recommend me some tunes

Postby SimonJ » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:34 pm

Good people of the forum, I need some help. Over the last few years my reggae record buying has consisted mainly of reissues of classic 70s and early 80s roots or filling in gaps in my On U Sound collection. Nothing wrong with that per se but I do feel I am living in the past - I've not bought any modern reggae since Damian Marley came to prominence about 8 or so years ago!

So, I was wondering whether anyone could recommend some classy new stuff. I'm sure there's some great stuff out there but don't really know where to look. I did check out Micah Shemaiah Dread at the Control after seeing it on this forum and was mighty impressed, although I guess it's very much steeped in the classic roots era.

So, what else is out there I might enjoy. Just one caveat - I'm not a great fan of digital rhythms, especially bass lines, unless done particularly well a la Pablo and Tubby. Even a lot of Jammy's digital stuff leaves me a bit bored after the second or third track that sounds the same...

Thanks in advance, peace and love.

Hi SimonJ,

here's my little selection....

Tony Curtis - Leave The Collie Alone (Watch This Sound Riddim)
Morgan Heritage - What We Need Is Love (You Don't Care Riddim)
Randy Valentine - Victory
Freddie McGregor Ft. Gappy Ranks - Standing Strong (Hi Fashion Riddim)
Richie Stephens Ft. Daddy U-Roy - Real Reggae Music (Swing Easy Riddim)
Pinchers - Wish You Were Mine (Tenement Yard Riddim)
Michael Fabulous - When You Smile
Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew - Murderer
Konshens - Jah Jah Love
Shy Fx Ft. Liam Bailey - Soon Come
Keida - Jamiacan Boy
Randy Valentine - Brixton Market (Answer Riddim)
Chronixx - Here Comes Trouble (Rootsman Riddim)
Peetah Morgan - World Revolution (Man Of The Living Riddim)
J.O.E. - Herbsman Hustling (Heavenless Riddim)
Da'ville - Dancehall Nice
Busy Signal - Reggae Music Again
Romain Virgo - You Think Mi Weak (Good Things Riddim)
Christopher Martin - Step Up
Da Professor - Peace & Unity
Konshens - Mr Judge (Adam & Eve Riddim)
Bitty McLean - Walk Away From Love

This is only my subjective view on what is the best 'modern' Jamaican music from the last couple of years. It would be a whole new thread discussing the current trends and poor state of reggae/onedrop/lovers rock/dancehall music today. Luckily there are still some conscious singers using either the classic riddims or sound, even if the production is done in Europe or elsewhere. Trust me, if you make this playlist you'll be smiling for an hour and eighteen minutes guaranteed. Let me know what you think!

Micah Shemiah / Pampi Judah Africa Here I come on Tuff Scout 10 inch. Old school feel on heavyweight new riddim, not your run of the mill new roots style, but as you say its all a matter of opinion!

If you wanna venture into new roots a bit more check out Russ D / Earl 16 Rise Up on Roots Youth 12 INCH good example of a great modern tune, I think from 2006, that smashes it for me!

Thanks for the recommendations folk, much appreciated.

There are a few older names in there and I'm interested in hearing their later work, I must confess to not paying much attention to some of the veterans like Bob Andy that are still out there doing it.

@minidub: One hour, eighteen minutes of music that will keep me smiling sounds just what I need, I will report back

Thanks again all, an evening of discovery awaits methinks :)

Whenever anyone asks me about modern reggae I always have the same suggestion: Midnite, the great roots band out of St. Croix is far and away my favorite contemporary reggae outfit. They have recorded an incredible number of albums since the early 2000s, many of which are less "accessible" than others (experimental, you might say). However, they have many tunes and several albums that I find very, very melodic/accessible and quite brilliant musically and especially lyrically. (And to be fair I also dig the less accessible stuff as I appreciate the creativity and risk that comes with producing music that sounds different). Singer/writer Vaughn Benjamin takes his messages way beyond the standard lyrical fare of most reggae groups, and has a wonderful singing style. His older brother Ron composes much of the music, and plays bass/keyboards.

You cannot go wrong with the group's earlier albums: Ras Mek Peace, Unpolished, Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance, and Ancient Maps are all incredible.

Here are some of my favorite Midnite tunes, in no particular order:

Also, if you like a good live show, be sure to catch them live when they come to a city near you!

Albumwise 2013 left us two works that I feel like considering classics:

Protoje's "8 Year Affair" and Jah9's "New Name".
If you like jamaican music you won't be disappointed.
