Reggae in Prague and Amsterdam?

Postby davesjukebox » Thu Dec 26, 2013 6:05 am

Will be visiting both in early-mid January. Any good shops around that carry reggae? Any reggae scenes in either city?

Thanks!

When I was in Prague to celebrate my mom turning 50 I couldn't find anything reggae. But on the airport on our way home I saw some familiar faces.

Also Vince Black was there but I never took a photo with him.

There is not really any scene in Amsterdam.. those days are long gone since the late 70s, early 80s . However there are some excellent record stores where with a little luck you can find goodies for low prices..

During my times in Amsterdam i´ve found many nice things in Rush Hour (http://www.rushhour.nl). It has mostly been different kind of world music, but they also have a small but fine selection of reggae vinyl - mostly reissues as i recall. I also heard that there exists a really nice shop out of the city center which should be the place to be if you´re looking for originals and rarities, but i´ve never visited that shop and never really found the exact location so correct me if am wrong, A-dam cats :D

Have a wonderful trip! Never been to Prague, but Amsterdam is a beautiful city, also in the winther time! :D

Great list, thanks Edgar. I'll only be there for 3 nights, and won't be able to visit every shop. I'm mostly after original JA/UK press 7", but any good reggae selection is fun to look through. If you know any well enough to recommend specifically, please do! I'll be staying near Rembrandtplein if it helps!

Thanks!

Best shop for reggae vinyl in NL is this one in Nijmegen, about a 1.5hr train ride from Amsterdam:

Lots of 12's.10's, LPs OP & repress... They keep boxes of JA singles behind the counter

Too bad about the 10th in Amsterdam, we leave on the 9th! Jumping around the UK a bit now, and got lucky in Manchester. Picked up:

Club Ska '67 LP on WIRL
This Is Reggae Vol 4 LP on Pama
Gaylads - We The People / Version 7" on Sonorous Sounds
Dandy - Take A Letter Maria / You're Coming Back 7" on Trojan
Chris Leon - Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All / Version 7" on Dynamic
Washington & Clarke - Happy Christmas / Version 7" on High Note

A few different shops, but total of about 30 GBP. Will post how Prague and Amsterdam go. Unfortunately won't be able to make it that far out of Amsterdam for Vinyl Archief, but thanks!

There's a couple of little record shops tucked away near the oudekirk in amsterdam. Vintage voudou and red light records I believe they're called.

There's a green grill gate with a buzzer next to it that you have to press to gain access, it's quite easy to miss though so keep your eyes peeled.

Just to cap this thread off...

Didn't find any shops in Prague but found a neat little reggae bar near the Charles Bridge. Went to several shops in Amaterdam but only picked up two LPs from one shop, Wax Well Records. Got Dillinger's Ready Natty Dreadie and Michigan and Smiley's Rub A Dub Style for 18 euro each, both on original JA Studio 1 labels.

Thanks again for the recs!
