Drums absent in mix

Postby Well Charge » Mon Aug 12, 2013 11:09 am

There are not many examples of mixes in which the drums are left (almost) absent, but I think it can have a very dramatic effect.

There is a Garnett Silk released dubplate for Killimanjaro "Joyful Noise" which features a cut of Real Rock without drums

Another example is Earthworm "Gangster Sound"

The dub to Johnny Osbourne "He Can Surely Turn The Tide" on Scientist's vampire LP also features a lot less drums than is usually the case.

Are there any other examples?

It doesn't have NO drums, but I've always found the 12" mix of Going Places-Hugh Mundell to be a bit frustrating ,cos the drums are out of the mix for ever ,and you only get the full drop for a short while at the end.....

Love the mix on the Hugh Mundell as well...

Al Campbell 'Rasta Time' has almost no drums in the mix, might be the same on other Artibella mixes.
Also on some early Studio 1 the drums are buried deep under...

Drums are of course there but often sounding thin and lacking weight and character, hence my ironic comment about them being "absent in the mix". Sorry, irony in writing does not always come through...

On So Much Dub To Give from Sir Coxsone's King of the Dub Rock Part 2 the drums only really come in around the half way mark and the rhythm is driven by bass and horns with some congas rattling away.
Love that tune though it doesn't sound great on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sChysdZ8PDg
