Jr. Keating - Weekend Lover

Postby kalcidis » Mon Nov 04, 2013 4:00 pm

I noticed on Ernie B's that this great set has been reissued on CD and in the comments he writes that it also includes a nice essay. Anyone that has the CD and can say if it's any worth (the essay that is)? Got the vinyl so I'm not that interested in buying it unless the liner notes are really worthwhile. Information on Jr. Keating is very scarce. The man had some very good songs but never managed to take it to the next level.

I have the CD but can't remember how in depth the liner notes are. I will try and check tonight when I get home.

I've also noticed it

"Jah Wrote Me A Letter From Zion" is one of my all time favorite reggae songs. It sounds extremely fast and extremely slow at the same time. To me it's kinda magic, really. I was feeling so happy when it was re-issued on Rootikal 7" a couple of years ago. The same label that also put out "Leave The Badness Alone" by Singie Singe. Two killer 7"s.

The cd release sounds like a very nice vinyl rip to me. I believe the original master tapes of the "Weekend Lover" album are either lost or unavailable for whatever reason. A great re-issue - what else can I cay?

Hi Kal, sorry to say but not much of an essay. Only about 5 or 6 short paragraphs. No real info on Keating at all except for mentioning his real name. They speak more on the Radics, Jah Thomas and Scientist than Keating.

I do now remember being disappointed with the liner notes when I got this, but I unfortunately don't own the vinyl, so am happy to have it.

Have the vinyl album, good album. Great underrated unrecorded vocalist.

Would love to have a dub counter part to the LP as there already is a DJ one with Jah Thomas.

Really?! I've never had that dub album and been meaning to buy it for years but have never gotten around to it. I hope you are right, Matt! Would make my day and week and month. And then I'd probably shelf it for a while and then it'd make my day, week and month again.

Just gave this album a listen and while it's not a dub companion of Weekend Lover, several of the tracks are rhythms found on that album (& several others are Barrington Levy/Junjo-Jah Life rhythms).

Pretty sure most of the riddims from Weekend Lover were also used for the Barry Brown showcase Midnight Rock at Channel 1 LP, which contains dubs for all those tunes.
