If you had to recommend 5 King Tubby dub albums, which ones would you list?

Termination dub and Freedom sounds in dub are my top choices (coincidence they are both on BAF). To me they have the kind of dubs that outshines the vocal cuts. Just perfect in my book.

Most of King Tubby albums are posthumous compilations, aren't they?

How many (and which) albums were released during his lifetime?

"King tubby surrounded by the dread at the national arena" (as originally worded) first came out as a UK pre-release with the title printed on a white label. The sleeve was a blank white sleeve with the same notes announcing the LP's contents credited to Carl Gayle of Black Music magazine, glued on to the front and back - it came out late 1975/ early 1976). This was quickly followed up by a proper UK Fay Music issued in 1976 according to the label.

Not sure if there was a JA release - does anyone know?

It was later re-released in the early 80's on I think Studio 16 - and again more recently.

As is often the case, the earlier LP's sound better

but in its original form, "National Arena" was a genuine, non post-humous release, correct?

I conducted the same poll in other Reggae forums, and I collected a total of 100 answers (I think it's 100 but feel free to verify and correct me if I'm wrong).

Here is the result of that unscientific but totally Tubby-cal poll:

10 "In Dub Conference Volume One (Moodisc, 1976)"
9 "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown"
9 "Dub From The Roots (Total Sounds, 1974)"
7 "Prophecy Of Dub (Prophets, 1976)"
6 "Termination Dub"
6 "Roots of Dub (Total Sounds, 1976)"
4 "King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators at Dub Station"
3 "Sound System International"
3 "Morwells 'Dub Me'"
3 "King Tubby's Prophecy of Dub (Blood & Fire)"
3 "Freedom Sounds in Dub"
3 "Dubbing With The Observer (Attack, 1975)"
3 "Dub Gone Crazy"
2 "The Legendary Skatalites in Dub "
2 "Surrounded By The Dreads At The National Arena"
2 "Shalom Dub"
2 "Rockers Meet King Tubby's In A Fire House"
2 "Meets Jacob Miller In A Tenement Yard"
2 "Dangerous dub"
2 "Black and White in dub"
1 "Watergate Rock"
1 "Pick A Dub, Atra"
1 "Niney Observer Presents King Tubby in Dub"
1 "KT Meets the Upsetter At The Grass Roots of Dub (with Lee Perry)"
1 "King Tubbys Special 1973 - 1976"
1 "King Tubby's Special comp "
1 "King Tubby Presents Sounclash Dubplate Style, Taurus"
1 "In Fine Style"
1 "In Dub Conference Volume Three (Moodisc, 1976)"

I would suspect the vast majority of those have very much nothing to do with king tubbys aside from possibly being mixed there by someone other than tubbys. there are really very very few true "king tubby albums" to choose from, probably less than 5; all the rest use the name but rarely have much to do with him personally.

one love

Maybe a lot were not mixed by tubby himself, but they were still mixed there. The distinctive sound of the place was still down to him and the establishment he ran.
