jah shaka red bull london eye 14 November

just seen that shaka will have one of the london eye booths for this years red bull event where each pod of the wheel has a different dj/artist inside

all streamed live, while it is good for exposure to a new audience and for representing roots reggae on a global stage i cant help but feel a bit conflicted that shaka should not be having anything to do with dirty red bull

although having said that the association has massivley increased channel one profile..so if it brings more people to the music and to the sound system dance then maybe that can only be a good thing???

my opinion of course but it tastes horrible, and is really bad for you. i would class all other energy drinks in the same bracket so its not just red bull. i just never really understood its popularity or how they seem to have so much money.

fair play they do some mad events and seem to have got into music in a big way but there is something about them that i find a bit sinister that they want to dominate everything.. (no different to any other multinational corporation then ..)

When I was younger, drinking a bit, and going through being hungover of a morning Red Bull picked me up, all be it in a temporary very unhealthy way. Like many big companies they came to prominence by manipulating people in the 'extreme sports' areas of culture such as snowboarding, skateboarding, mountain biking, BMX etc. Drinkers also got on board quickly as Red Bull allows revellers to increase there party stamina.

Personally having tried it, I prefer to eat fruit as an energy booster and keeping my body healthy. For Shaka to do this confuses me, but then again if I were 60 odd years old and music was my main source of income I'd take any gig I could, even at the risk of alienating fans as from a business point of view it makes sense.

I'm sure this news of Shakas gig with Red Bull, Millenium Wheel (who owns this now,?) is going to divide the fans a bit, those that object to the 'commercialisation' of this music and vibes with events like this. The recent reissue of the tune of the same title Commercialisation of Rastafari says it all for me, but as a musician / soundman sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Imagine the hotbox though. . .herbalist dream in one of those pods!

Yes that is the answer.

Selectas / artists are part of the entertainment industry ,
Taking sounds to a new audience is a wonderful thing.

the set up for the public is quite odd, i think it is a silent disco at the bottom of the wheel with headphones where you choose which pod you are listening to (although i might be mistaken)- and i think tickets have already gone ...

so really the only way to listen is through the website live or afterwards

rodigan did it last year to represent reggae music and the rest of the line up is quite varied with something for everyone from lots of other club nights/labels.. conceptually it is a good idea as an interesting way to interpret a london landmark

if nothing else will be interesting to see what selection shaka plays and whether he gets on the mic that much - if its like like last year it only lasts about an hour (2 revolutions of the wheel) which in a shaka dance on a good night would only be about 4 or 5 tunes...

just out of interest i saw this - http://www.weareblahblahblah.com/blog/i ... interview/

interview is with nicky culture rather than shaka himself but definitley seems to be on the 'spreading the message to a wider audience' approach, which ultimately can only be a good thing

…this is the best thing i've bothered to tune into in ages…! It's a bit like Jam if people remember the late night show from the a decade or so ago.

They've opened a live feed about five minutes before on air and left open lines in the control room, just banter and rehearsals including one person asking another if anyone they know is coming to this.. then after 8mins of live feed, we had a hand over to some hyped up mc/grime and then they stopped.. still thinking it was a rehearsal and started chatting…! Most of the pod's are not broadcasting and there's silence as a helicopter just circles.. this is great stuff. Would be great to be a tech on this project.

The record player seems to be faulty. He had some technicians over a few minutes ago to check on it.

Nice to see he does his thing despite some malfunctioning equipment and most attendees just staring at their cellphones
