I know that we all love artists because of their vocal style but where they're not actually very good singers in the sense of technical ability. This seems to go hand in hand with reggae to a large degree. What makes Tony Brevitt and several others of his generation great is that they could actually sing. They were professionals with very high standards and were born with a special talent.
I do get annoyed when I listen to some contemporary singers because when you compare them to Tony Brevitt, Slim Smith, Pat Kelly, Freddy McKay, Dennis Brown, etc., etc. they can't sing and a lot of people listening to their music don't seem to hear it or maybe they don't care. What makes Tony Brevitt great is that his music is timeless and he makes many modern singers sound like amateurs.
