dubs with steel pan

Postby dan i dubdub » Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:35 pm

Anyone got any leads for good dubs with steel pan?

Worked with some drummers today who had a steel pan, such a beautiful and subtle instrument. Feel really charged up about the day and wondered what tunes might be out there. The only one that comes to my mind is Mystic Red Corporation's Precarnival 10", which i cant find a youtube clip for.

In my head I can hear something from Mad Professor... on the Mother Nature album I think, but I'm at work and can't check

Yes, I think Mad Prof has several dubs with steel pan. Here's a good one, from the Psychedelic Dub album:

Werner: That was a damn fine rhythm. Is the rest of the album any good?

It's not great all the way, I think, but there are quite a few good tracks on it. Actually, when I was listening to samples of the album to find that steel pan track, I was surprised how many good tracks it has (it's been a while since I played it).

Mad Prof produced an album with Pan Africanist (Patrick Augustus), an artist who plays steel drums.
That one rekindled my interest in Ariwa music. Not sure it got much recognition in reggae circles but it's a good album, really.

lovely, thanks all. I had forgotten about the Curtis Lynch dub, a very tough tune that one. Will get it out when I get home :)

Mad Professor rings a few bells too, sure I used to have a tape of his with steel pan on it, but never knew what any of the tracks were on that anyway. Will investigate further.

This is not a reggae track - it's a soul/funk track (laid down by Hamilton Bohannon) and the instrument is not steel pan - it's vibraphone (with the great Lionel Hampton). Those caveats aside, if your tastes run to nice instrumental tracks with a steel-pan-like sound on top of it, this stuff is about as good as it gets. Pretty awesome stuff IMO

Yep, plenty of Ariwa tunes.

Cojo Ried - "Champion Don" synth steel pan.
