How many Augustus Pablo records do you REALLY need?

yes jb, a pretty good track! i know what you mean by tweeting away and not too tight on the rhythm but it doesn't bother me because the whole thing together sounds super. i wonder if i would listen to the melodica sounds with a different mind set if i didn't know it was augustus pablos' son but there is definitely a deep spiritual feel to it!

I rate the Bobby Kalphat tune Counterpunch , not saying that it's better than some Augustus Pablo productions but a top tune none the less .

Addis Pablo is definitely on the way up. Not a bad new record from him, but not as good as Call Of The Righteous (versions to Jah9's New Name). He seems to be on a mission to bring instrumental and dub music back to Jamaica, for which he gets my total respect. He will never be able to move out of his father's shadow, but like others (Young Warrior, Joe Ariwa) he is serious about carrying on his father's works. His work with Sons Of Dub is quite experimental at times too, check out his Soundcloud page.

I LOVE everything he recorded in the 70's but couldnt stand the "new" sound. Even some of the live drums recorded from 1985 onwards to me sound too unfriendly.

Also Norris Reid's album is a gem, the Tetrack record is wicked and obviously so are the Jacob Miller recordings...

imo essential is 'king tubbys meets rockers uptown' - the follow up "Rockers meets King Tubbys in a Fire House' is also supreme work. 'East of the river nile' is also recommended. I also rate the PS compilation 'In Fine Style'; and as mentioned already, his production-work for Tetrack is crucial! Not reaching these heights are later productions like 'Rising Sun', which was my first Pablo album though, so I rate this as well!

Pablo was a producer, arranger, multi-instrumentist. He had his own sound and his own productions were the best work he did.
When he was just playing for other producers ( over other people's riddims ) it wasn't as good IMO....like the other melodica players from the 70s/80s.
Many recordings credited to him were no more than studio sessions for other producers where he doesn't play his best....to me at times doesn't even sound interested....quick one takes.
He was very annoyed that he was credited on the cover of many albums that he didn't consider his work. I experienced that myself!

This Is..... Is my favourite reggae instrumental LP. The players of instruments on that one are superb on every single track. Not dubbed up like later releases but absolute killer.

I love Pablo's music and was buying it as far back as 1978. I basically had a clutch of 12" including the totally awesome Earth Wind and Fire and the Earl Zero/Pablo disc as well as as Original Rockers and Meets KT inna Firehouse. Those two LPs remain favourites. I never knew about the Meets King Tubby Uptown for many years I think that's a passable effort as well
The Pressure Sounds releases are great - but all in all I think I prefer to hear Pablo on crackly Ja vinyl as it just seems to add to the vibe.

Definitely Capullo, as Goldilocks said - not too little, not too much.... just right!
Those new Onlyroots releases are great but it does seem odd to listen to Pablo on such clean vinyl.
