Sometimes people confuses a great riddim with simple one finger melodica as a good melodica tune...To me is just a good riddim with some melodica on top. To me Pablo's melodica playing is the best by miles, all the rest are (we are) imitators....occassionally we can come up with a couple of decent tunes, maybe half a dozen, but Pablo did on his own more than the rest put together. And his trademark organ, piano, clavinet, etc..... Pablo played all kind of keyboards apart from the melodica.

Sorry but this question is pretty stupid. It reminds me of the time I was in a record store, looking in the reggae section and some tool walked over to where I was and said "You know this is all basically the same song right?"

Augustus Pablo was brilliant and original. Lamely referring to his work as "chill out" music, "that pretty much blends into the atmosphere" is just insulting. It reduces him to some compilation cd at Starbucks that a clueless college hippy buys while waiting for their vente soy latte. Like I told the knucklehead I came across in the store that day, "you either get it or you don't".

Mr Conscious hits the nail on the head!!!

I may be wrong, but it sounds like the original poster has not fully explored the subject. I'm no big collector - more small fry - but I've got loads of Pablo. Like many artists some works resonate with me more than others (I'm not so keen on some of his melodica covers) but amongst his long career there are some absolutely phenomenal creations.

If you haven't heard it I can recommend the multi CD compilation Mystic World of Augustus Pablo for a great introduction to his productions.

But honestly, doesn´t his stuff pretty much blend into the atmosphere? I mean...can you really tell the difference when you listen to a couple of his albums on shuffle or whatever? I can´t... :D

If all of his tracks sound the same to you, one record should suffice.

Not a bad time to investigate the world of Pablo, with recent quality reissues from Only Roots, Maroon, Third World etc. Worth checking is 'In Fine Style', lots of great versions there. 'This is Augustus Pablo' also served me very well in my younger days.

Relax. I said I love the guy and simply wanted to open up some discussion about him. Don't over react to a message board post.

that's a pretty good track capullo, but to me it sounds like he is tweeting away a bit too much and not enough floating on top of the riddim if you know what I mean. kinda sounds like a bunch other Pablo disciples/imitators, but maybe its just that one track.

one love
