How many Augustus Pablo records do you REALLY need?

Postby AT2JA » Sat Aug 31, 2013 7:40 am

I love Augustus, I really do. Some of the best chill out music I have ever heard.

But honestly, doesn´t his stuff pretty much blend into the atmosphere? I mean...can you really tell the difference when you listen to a couple of his albums on shuffle or whatever? I can´t... :D

Just wondering what the board thinks, or maybe you just want to praise the man. Agree or disagree, let´s talk a little Pablo! :D

his productions in the 70's were some of the best in my opinion. probably some of the most influential reggae as well, the 'far east' sound. HIs playing as well was obvisouly incredible

his vocal productions are amongst the best in the '70s, and not 'samey' IMO

but his instrumental recordings - well, just say i concur with the original poster. I love his '70s instrumentals but they do tend to blur into one for me :o

I think they were excellent right up to the end, cant really get enough of them even if they blend together a bit. valley of kush I think it was, final full length new recordings, excellent all the way through. even his drum machine stuff really grew on me, King Selassie I Calling double lp I thought was really good.

so, in summary, I think the answer to the question is: all of them.

one love

Valley Of Jehosaphat jb!

I'm with jb on this one, never too many Pablo records for me! I started young with his music and to me it is the original foundation to which I always return.

Buy ALL of them :D You can't have too many. As someone remarked on here, the guy was a genius. Get all the productions as well.

When Java came out it was like being hit by a truck....that tune would play again and again in the dance....he has some lovely pieces but the melodica is a bit of a limited instrument and bound to sound the same on most things....i actually prefer Joe White on Kenyatta and President Rock for a different style...

anyway King Tubbys meets the rockers is a fantastic tune and East of the River nile a great album..but i don't own much more than that outside of him on the version of a few mid seventies 45's

Also add 'This Is Augustus Pablo' to the list.. some great tunes there and I rarely hear it mentioned..

Since Steve Rice started the non-A.Pablo recommendations ... Pablove Black's Dread Head gets my vote - The melodica / playing adds a lot to the riddim!

And for the non recommendations: Glen Brown does a good job at adding very unnecessary melodica on tunes.. and whoever it is on the flip of Prince Jazzbo's 'For Star' (Guiding Star) on Count 123... oh my...

I think he's the same as most other reggae artists, only in small quantities can he be truly appreciated.
