Colombia Colly

Postby j j » Tue Jul 23, 2013 8:01 am

A friend who dabbles in reggae asked me what the vocal versions are on which Jah Lion/Lloyd deejay's over. Got some but others I've drawn a blank?

1. Wisdom = Gatherers - Words Of My Mouth
2. Dread Ina Jamdong = ?
3. Hay Fever = Susan Cadogan - Fever
4. Flashing Whip = Kentucky Skank
5. Colombia Colly = Silvertones - Rejoice Jah Jah Children
6. Fat Man = ?
7. Bad Luck Natty = Dub Organiser
8. Black Lion = Locks Lee - What Can I Do
9. Little Sally Dater = Chenley Duffus - Forgot To Be Your Lover
10. Sata = ? A cut of Satta Masa Gana ( is that Jah Lion singing the background lyrics or some other artist?)
11. Soldier & Police War = Jr Murvin - Police & Thieves

Just located this thread from Chatty Mouth board

I recently bought the 2006 Island Japan CD reissue of Jah Lion's Colombia Colly.

I've been trying to match up the closest vocal or dub source rhythms that were used for this album.

Using the algoriddim site was very helpful in this.

So far, I've got:

Gathers - Words -> Jah Lion - Wisdom
Upsetters - Set Up Yourself -> Jah Lion - Dread Ina Jamdong
Susan Cadogan - Fever -> Jah Lion - Hay Fever
Upsetters - Kentucky Skank -> Jah Lion - Flashing Whip
Silvertones - Rejoice Jah Jah Children -> Jah Lion - Colombia Colly
Upsetters - Dub Organizer -> Jah Lion - Bad Luck Natty
Chenley Duffus And The Soul Avengers - To Be Your Lover -> Jah Lion - Little Sally Dater
Junior Murvin - Police And Thieves -> Jah Lion - Soldier And Police War

Were there other Perry produced songs that featured the same instrumental backing as Jah Lion's Fat Man, Black Lion, or Sata?

I know that there's a Perry mix of Augustus Pablo's take of the Satta rhythm called Silent Satta on the Pressure Sounds El Rockers anthology, but it seems to be a totally different instrumental take of the Satta rhythm.

On the Jah Lion version, there's some harmony vocals going on, so I'm wondering if there was a Perry produced vocal version on this exact rhythm. Was there?

Also, Jah Lion's Fat Man has always been a favorite of mine. The algoriddim site lists this as being the same rhythm as Fat Man by Fats Domino and Derrick Morgan. Did Perry ever produce a song with the same instrumental backing as Jah Lion's Fat Man?

Also, the algoriddim site lists Jah Lion's Black Lion being based Donnie Elbert's What Can I Do. It's kind of a early R&B sounding rhythm. Did Perry ever released another song on this exact rhythm?

Thanks for your help gents. I've been working on making an "expanded" Colombia Colly disc for kicks.

Also posted at the other board:

The original to "Black Lion" is Locks Lee's "What Can I Do," which is on Clocktower 7" backed with a dub, "Wah Fi Do Version." There is another vocal cut to the "Dread ina Jamdong" rhythm, "Ivory Girl" by Thomas White on Hitrun 12". Both are very good tunes, with the latter being an all-time favorite of mine.

Good spotting on the "Sata" rhythm, I hadn't notice the instrumentation was different from the Augustus Pablo cuts before you pointed it out. The Satta cut on Jazzbo's LP for Scratch is on the same rhythm as the Pablo tunes.

Thanks Fish! Time to start tracking down the Locks Lee 7" and Thomas White 12" to buy.

That Locks Lee tune also came on a UK label called Kiss, production credits going to Clem Bushay. I have the Clocktower US press.

PS: It's a killer, also check out the Milton Henry cut for Rupie Edwards over the Skanga riddim.

The Thomas White tune was voiced in the UK at Crypt Studios in Buckinghamshire by producer Carl Fletcher on a copy of the rhythm given to him by Scratch when he was in JA, so a pedant could argue that it's not really a true Scratch production... but it's still a nice tune!

I'd never noticed before that 'Columbia Collie' was on the same rhythm as 'Rejoice Jah Jah Children' - must go and dig out the album and play it straightaway!!

I've heard that - - produced "Ivory Girl" using a Black Ark rhythm (???)

Ring The Alarm:
Bass Culture:
Eternal Thunder:
Carl "Stero" Fletcher produced 'Ivory Girl'
So I guess I can rest knowing I pretty much compiled the best Scratch produced Colombia Colly Expanded Disc I could. I still want to track down those other songs that were mentioned that were produced by others.

Here's the tracklisting and sources that I used:

01 Gatherers - Words (I Am The Upsetter) (Trojan)
02 Jah Lion - Wisdom (Colombia Colly) (Island Japan)
03 Upsetters - Set Up Yourself (Baffling Smoke Signal) (Heartbeat)
04 Jah Lion - Dread Ina Jamdong (Colombia Colly) (Island Japan)
05 Susan Cadogan - Fever (Scratchy Sounds) (Trojan)
06 Jah Lion - Hay Fever (Colombia Colly) (Island Japan)
07 Upsetters - Kentucky Skank (Upsetter Box Set) (Trojan)
08 Jah Lion - Flashing Whip (Colombia Colly) (Island Japan)
09 Silvertones - Rejoice Jah Jah Children (Upsetter Box Set) (Trojan)
10 Jah Lion - Colombia Colly (Colombia Colly) (Island Japan)

Also on the Black Lion/What Can I Do rhythm is Jah Woosh's "Love Jah And Live" (Kiss 7"/D.J.Legend LP)
