I think they are at the Malcolm X centre on City Road.

Should be a busy day all over.

Check live events pages for more details of Bristol and Oxford carnivals among others. Sounds like there might be more than last year. Everyone was too busy flying the red white and blue to fly the red gold and green.

I don't know if there are any "sounds" per se at this event but the Lambeth Country Show has some live music this year including: Max Romeo, Cornell Campbell, Natty and Manasseh. Free entry 20/21 July

This is a subject close to my heart. There used to be massive free stage shows and sound system events in London parks such as Brockwell Park and Peckham Rye park but they were stopped due to mindless violence from a small minority.

Lambeth County Show still going strong in Brockwell Park - you can see Max Romeo and Cornel Campbell for free there in a couple of weeks time.

Yes Ringo, I've been to the Lambeth County Show. Saw Prince Allah, Bushman and others there. But that's small fry to the events that used to happen in the park. I remember one year with Coxsone and Jah Shaka. Coxsone sounded seriously heavy and crisp and Shaka killed it with some old time roots and culture. Prior to that Johnny Clarke was in the Park and tore up the place. Even he recalls it as one of his most memorable performances. I can't remember if it was the Coxsone and Shaka day or the time that Frankie Paul was singing on Coxsone, but a guy walked into the park with an axe and proceeded to bury it in another guy's head.

In Peckham Rye Park I remember sounds like Frontline and stage shows with Earl 16, Errol Dunkley, Mikey Dread etc. At one of these events one guy chased another out of the park and proceeded to stab him to death against the railings.

Once we were all enjoying a stage show at Burgess Park when a guy pulled out tear gas canister and threw it into the crowd. Apparently they refused to hold another reggae event there after that.

Makes me sick.

that is sad RG, on several levels. Id like to think that times have changed enough that a roots tent in a London park wouldn't cause any problems. It seems the biggest problem nowadays with free park festivals is that they get to be too popular and their success makes them unable to keep things free and small scale for long.
