Outdoor sound events - London and beyond

Postby mikus » Mon May 27, 2013 10:26 am

Theres nothing that beats a soundsystem playing in the open air - Im wondering if we can pool the events that take place outside. Im in London so London is of most interest to me, but im sure more international events would be of interest to others.

Also Im thinking particularly of regular/annual events rather than one-offs, but one-offs would be welcome too.

Thread prompted by the Channel One session yesterday playing in the courtyard outside Vibe Bar. Great session, despite a small run in with noise pollution the set was still played at a strong level. Ras Kayleb was saying that this event has happened before 3 years back but for some reason or other they didnt want to do it again - tried again this year and hoping to do the same again next year. Sunday on the 2nd May Day Bank Holiday the date. 7pm finish and entry was a fiver

Last year at the Whitecross Stree Party, a little community event near Old Street, Solution played out both days, Saturday and Sunday. The dates for this year are 20-21st July. Not sure if Solution are playing this again, but hope they are. 7pm finish and free entry.

NH Carnival of course

Any more?

quite a bit "beyond" London but some people used to set up at the Berkeley marina lawn in sf bay area (California) and really blast out some good reggae amongst the rave stuff. I was out there a few times and some nice vibes happening despite the 30 mph constant wind (its a kite flying park actually). I think they got chased out of there eventually and had to either move indoors or quit altogether. that's the way it goes over here: if youre having fun and maybe making a little noise, it gets shut down eventually if not immediately. all that said, there is pretty much nothing here to compare to the uk sound culture so events like this are few and far between and generally held under the radar on someones private property (farm, warehouse, etc)

one love

Unity Day in Hyde Park, Leeds is usually a good one. Most years include Iration Steppas in the park + other sound systems like High Pressure and Symbiosis.

sounds good and worth the trip...
Im trying to find a date for it and got as far as:
If you're a local and know the date, PLEASE don't post it on the net- if Unity Day gets too big it won't be happening again (or it'll be gated and ticketed which we definitely don't want).

 ....will leave them in peace then. The victim of its own success is what scuppered the Finsbury Park/Solution thing as well, I think Im right in saying

This made me smile though

Centre of The Universe crew, a likkle 12 volt sound outta Brixton, often are out and about in the Brixton area. Centre also went to the 420 weed party in Hyde Park recently.

I'm honoured to be part of the crew of selectors, for my part keeping it roots until people demand another style (usually ends up messily via some rap into drum n bass!).

Centre is free, mobile, and always in the spirit of peace, love and unity.

Keep up to date with the mini sound here:

nice! see you out there one day!
there used to be a great soundsystem thing in the 90s in Brockwell Park...what was that now...??
lambeth county fair is okay with its stage and all, but a sound in a tent would make it

Yeah Mikus respect! A proper organised sound event in Brockwell Park would make my summer (if the sun ever comes back), especially if I could select for an hour as part of the proceedings ( )

RDK are the local sound I'd like to see there, along with King Simeon sound.

I'd prefer this to a stage set up with PA sets and token DJ's between bands / artists.

I remember going to see Shaka back in 2002 in Victoria PArk in Hackney for the Respect festival, this was the last time I went to an outdoor sound system event in a London park.

Hold tight Stoke Newington for the annual Farleigh Road session in the street featuring Culture E, Touch Above, Bushman, myself (Jah Echo) and more. Entebbe and REality Soldiers often take part in this too. I've been told this is set for July. . . :D

please post the details, id make the journey north for that...

Its come back to me --- the Brcokwell Park thing i was thinking of was the Legalise Cannabis rallys aka 'Jayday' - definitley ran early 2000s - RDK played it amongst many others
was a successful event - too successful - so the council killed it with bureaucracy and expense IIRC
