"Say Watt? Le Culte du Sound System" --a summer in Paris

Postby seb_carayol » Wed May 22, 2013 6:04 am

Hey! Not sure if this has been posted over here or not yet, but I'm curating this pretty huge art show in Paris, June 21st to August 25th, at la Gaité Lyrique museum in Paris -talking pretty much National museum size.

The intent there is to reveal of course the Jamaican/reggae roots of sound system culture, but also to show different of its manifestations worldwide (Colombia, Kenya, Trinidad, France, Brazil etc...), and how it carried all the way, through hip hop (early days boombox thing, block parties), rave and DIY makeshift installations, to proper contemporary art, that has sometimes not a lot to do with music per se.

Reggae-wise, we'll kickstart the event with a free Jah Observer dance, outdoors, on June 21st, we'll have also a few other musical guests of interest (Unity Sounds, among others), I'm sure I'll come and bug y'all over here about new dates every now and then.

There will also be screenings, conferences, record swaps, outdoors mini-sessions on solar-powered sound systems, workshop for kids --not to mention Limonious' first full-on retrospective (not just album covers), Beth Lesser's pics, an exhibition of Sassa's flyers (mixed with hip hop own's Buddy Esquire), King Tubby's OG boxes etc etc.

All in all, almost two years in the works!

It's all here (in French) :

and

Feel free to come!

Looks brilliant, Seb! Was talking to my girlfriend about trying to catch this and she was very positive so we might come to Paris for a weekend to check it out.

Robin --hit me up when you go! Records swaps' dates are not definite yet. Music-wise, Unity is playing on July 6th I believe?
There will be a bunch of conferences too (all in French)

Seb,

While I cannot make it overseas for the Exhibit (I would love to, trust me!).

I was wondering if there is any way to get one of the posters you showed on this thread for my studio? I love the design and would be proud to have it hang on the wall.

Many thanks,

be well

Thanks everybody!
Concert lineup was just updated :
. Jah Observer/Blackboard Jungle outdoors on June 21st (free! Carnival style), for the fete de la musique
. Unity Sounds + Mark Ainley : July 6th

... etc...

Plus there will be about a dozen smaller dances on solar sound systems throughout the summer... I'll be in touch!

It's underway.. I think/hope ?
Regardless, all texts in the show itself, for each piece, will be in French+English.
