Tunes with the Best Drumming

Postby Scrub-A-Dub » Tue May 21, 2013 3:44 pm

Forget about the bass line for one second... Looking for any tunes where the drumming really stands out, rhythmwise, tasty fills or just goddam crazyness! Any crucial drumming tune recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I vill start with easy ones:

Reggae Regular - The Black Star Liner
and
Yabby You meets Sly & Robbie Along With Tommy McCook - Sly's Mood

cheers

First one that immediately springs to mind is the 12" mix of Gregory Isaacs' Mr. Know It All on the DEB-label, mind-boggling drumming imo!

Nice topic :)

That reggae regular tune is good, hihats are wicked.
Well i guess for me things like Carly's playing on the Rastaman Vibration album is classic one drop.

A big fan also of Drummie Zeb's style of phrasing.
Yeah so many great drum tracks out there.

Must say though, lately i don't listen to too many live drums, really inspired by the digitally programmed stuff.
That takes things to a whole new level, some of the various " Steppa" tracks from a few years back sound incredible.

King Tubby's dub of Glen Brown's production »Version 78 Style« which is the dub to Jah Joe's very nice »Love on the Seen« (Love Power 7") and a next cut to Sylford Walker's incredible »Deuteronomy« (trying out this thing called name dropping).

Was talking just yesterday about the drums on it. Rarely I've heard a reggae song with such intense drumming. Mind blowing stuff!

itself a version of the "Death In The Arena" riddim wich comes from Bernard Purdie's Funky Donkey

Another killer druming part is "Shaka Special" (especially the end of the tune) on Jah Shaka Meets Aswad at Addis Ababa Studio LP

:o I didn't know of the DITA rhythm and Bernard Purdie connection to be honest and I even have the Soul Drums LP! Will have to go and listen right away. What a fantastic drummer to keep this slightly on topic.

Anything with Tin Leg drumming, teacher of Carly B. He is on the Rockers Uptown sessions.
Also check the S1 cut of Every Tongue Shall Tell, a bit muffled but listen closely. Amazing technique.
Love to all

Always admired Sly Dunbar's inventive drumming.

The drumming in this tune blew me away as a young kid learning the drums.
Sly plays a paradiddle between the hi-hat and snare drum which looks impressive when played quite fast.

Check from 4.25 mark:
