Tony Tuff recommendations

Postby Mark T » Wed Mar 13, 2013 5:32 pm

I don't really know Tony Tuff and don't own anything by him but I was listening to a couple on Youtube, Rumours of War and Run Come Come and I liked what I heard.
What are his best tunes?
Cheers, Mark T

Think RB covered a bunch of them. Have to say that the Separation/Come Along 10" he put out doesn't ever get very far from the record player.

I have a nice GG's 12" of I'll Have To Get You followed by a nice DJ version (forget the DJ) with version on the flip. I play it quite a bit.

And another favorite track of mine is Try Our Best from the Presenting Mr Tuff album.

Don't forget he was once a member of the African Brothers, a harmony-group that made great tunes for labels such as Del Tot, Dukies, Success and their own Top Ten and Ital labels.

One of the maddest Tony Tuff tunes is "Next Door Neighbor" on the Prodigy label 7".
Late 70's steppers. Great lyrics about a neighbour complaining about his music:

"my neighbor next door he can't go to bed, the sound of my music clap him in him head,
he comes to my door, start to complain but I play my music again and again and again.
Leave my rockers alone!"

He DJ's the flipside in fine style too!

Also Tony Tuff handles the lead on my favourite African Brothers tune "Run for your life".

Cool It / Studio 1... (Satta riddim) late 90s voicing if I'm not mistaken..
Round The World / Dancehall 7" (Take 5 riddim)
Shine Your Lights / Bop Productions (miraculously, a tune that's not on youtube!)

First 2 riddims are imo overdone to death.. but Tony Tuff's vocals make these riddims exciting again..
