Earth Disciples - Peace Love & Harmony

Recently reissued on Kingston Connexion, originally on a 56 Hope Road. Love the track! Any info on the Earth Disciples? Who were they? Other worthwhile tunes? Only found info about a next title called So Come On on Music Works, don't know if that's the same group. Did the group maybe operate under a different name too?

Thanks, big tune!

the other Earth Disciples tune well worth investigating is "Who's Running" on Twin Rock 7" - about 2 years ago quite a few copies were sold from Jamaica - as if the box of dead shop stock was discovered. Pressing quality was not so great but deep tune still

Someone pointed me to this:

Seems to be from the Jamaica Observer from Sunday, November 25, 2007 as found here:

http://www.bobmarleymagazine.com/forum_ ... -2832.html

During the latter part of the 1970s, three buoyant, optimistic, confident, young singers from Trench Town, the community widely regarded as the craddle of reggae, caught the attention of no less a person than the king of reggae, Bob Marley.

Actually, these aspiring entertainers were the remnants of a five-member group before they began making their mark in 1979 as Earth Disciples. They gained notoriety in that year for their record Peace, Love and Harmony, in sync with the name under which they were performing.

"That tune made a mark for us," recalled Calpert Nicholson, who was a member of the promising trio which no longer performs as a group. "As a result Bob (Marley) put us on all the shows he was doing in Jamaica for that year. One Love concert, Unity In Motion, everything weh Bob deh pon, him put we pon it," added the former member of Earth Disciple.

Continuing his reflection on the group, Nicholson, now pursuing a solo career using the epithet Laga Disciple told Yesterday's Notes, that after some newspaper publicity generated by their first single Peace, Love and Harmony, Bob Marley indicated an interest in doing an album with the group.

"When we did that tune (Peace, Love and Harmony) and got some newspaper publicity, Bob said he was going to do an LP with us," explained the singing member of staff at the Observer.

Laga Disciple, who recently performed with Lloyd Parks and We the People, as well as with New Beat Band at studio owner/operator Horace Brown's birthday party, added: "So it happened that Bob left Sangie Davis in charge of us, and Bob went away, and the next thing we know Bob did not return. We hear sey Bob dead." However, Sangie Davis, has a slightly different take on the sequence of events.

According to Davis, who is a respected producer, composer, arranger, musician, it was the Wailers' guitarist, Junior Marvin who worked on the Earth Disciples' recording, and not him. And that he, Sangie Davis, was responsible for the group's publicity as it was his job at Tuff Gong at the time. "It (the record) was done at Tuff Gong, but the production was done by Junior Marvin," Sangie Davis said.

Laga Disciple, is one of two former Earth Disciples who are in the process of making an individual mark on the music scene. The most famous of the two as well as the group, is Devon Beckford, better known as the gospel singer Ziggy Soul. The other member of Earth Disciples, was its lead vocalist Roy Dillon. But there were also Barrington Sales and Errol Porter in the formative years of that outfit.

As Bob Marley's prodigy,Ziggy Soul's tremendous contribution to first, Earth Disciples and later True Change was so indelible, that the Wailing Souls, persuaded him to join their band. He was instrumental in the production of four of the group's albums and sang lead on two of its songs.

Now an established Christian artiste, Ziggy Soul's music features a creative combination of gospel songs done mostly with a reggae flavour with his acoustic guitar and unique vocal delivery.

Apparently desirous to manifest the title of a single the group recorded for producer Gussie Clarke called So Come On, Laga Disciple is aiming to achieve his own distinction. "After Bob passing, man get frustrated 'til the group just fade out as every man went their separate way, so I'm trying to find my own niche," the Observer's caretaker said.

From the jamaican slide show : http://diaporamaphotosreggaejamaicainsula.blogspot.com/

One of them, Calpert, was the gardener of the Gleaner a few years back
- that's where we met him for an interview about the short-lived career of his group
(his meeting Marley and so on). The French label then asked us for his contact to
reissue this very nice tune which was a very good idea.
