Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area - a Purpleman Showcase

Yes people, here's another special one I'm quite enthousiastic about myself. How often have you seen (if ever!) a mix dedicated to the works of Purpleman? Well, here is one! After having mixes focusing on the works of deejays Nicodemus (2x), Toyan, Papa Tollo and Dillinger, this time it is Purpleman getting the bmc-treatment. Mix of close to 60 minutes, Purpleman tracks combined with some vocal-cuts on the riddims and a few dubs. Same style as always, no full tracks, added soundsamples, all mixed together to one hour of early 80s niceness. Being not too well-known, I hope I can introduce this fine deejay to some of you and for those knowing him, enjoy this showcase of mainly album-tracks.

Sources are given (number behind title combines with list below tracks).

Drop me a comment if you enjoyed the music and effort. Thanks.

YES!

my favorite 80s deejay along w/ Nicodemus.

glad to see you have done this!

one BIG tune missing, i hope you find it for your next mix -
purpleman - daddy mix (observer 12" US) essentially a dubplate-style tune bigging up "Daddy" Studio Mix soundsystem. BIG one.

+ two others I've yet to scan. A very nice deejay! Perhaps my favourite of the albinos.

Will download this mix as soon as I return to Sweden. Anyone that knows what Purpleman does nowadays? I heard that he still is in JA but I know nothing more.

RB; I've heard the one track you sent me where he goes quite hard at the one Yellow.

"Who say me favour Yellowman? I have jawbone him have none" or something along those lines. Nice song but not crucial.

There's a song by him on Youtube where he sings.

Cheers all! Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, big artist. It all started with the 45 of Get Me Mad for me and am on the look for his other work since. Still hoping to get my hands on those Peter Yellow albums on vinyl at some point, kal. I only have 'm as mp3 (therefore didn't use 'm in the mix), but love to get the vinyl. The tracks of Purpleman on the combo with Sister Candy are also on the combo-set with Tollo which I do have, so not really looking out for that one (obviously would get it if found at a reasonable price).

Thanks for the tip on that daddy mix tune, RB, will keep it in mind, never heard of it before.
Haven't heard his more recent recordings, only heard he did record after his 80s peak.

Good to see more enthousiasm for this artist! 8)

so basically it looks like purpleman redid the don carlos album "spread out" from csa (also reissued under a number of names like lazer beam etc) with his dj stuff over the top of the riddims?

I found that 6 of the 10 tracks on Carlos' Spread Out have Purpleman riding the same riddims, jb. The Purpleman tracks are on the Bunny Lee produced sets he did (saves Pappa Tollo and Purpleman & Friends, both on Vista).

i have a 12" from don carlos on what i recall is a USA label with kind of goofy titles...from what i recall its pass me the razor blade (nee: lazer beam) on one side and spread out on the other. both are followed by dj versions, and one side is purpleman...i think its the lazer beam side but not sure. i dont see that listed but what i do see listed is:

31) Don Carlos - Spread Out (2)
32) Purpleman - Purpleman A Go Boom It Up (3)

unfortunately that is not the title i recall from the 12" though it may be the 12" didnt have a title for the dj cut. do you know this 12"? is that the same as on the 12" if indeed its the "spread out" side that purpleman rides?

anyway looks like a great collection there bmc, as always.

one love

The 12" Jah Bill mentions sounds similar to the Shuttle 12" by Don Carlos and Purpleman titled "Rock Dis Ya Music" (SH002) although Shuttle was a UK label, not USA.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~tapirs/sh12.htm

Unfortunately, Tapir doesn't have much detail on it. Rock Dis Ya Music is almost definitely a DJ cut to Spread Out but I'll need to find my copy in order to check what's on the other side.

I don't know that 12", jb, but if it is the one quadruped mentions it likely is Carlos' Spread Out (which contains that line in the lyrics, Rock Dis Ya Music). Doubt Purpleman has two different takes on that riddim, so my guess would be it's the Spread Out / Boom It Up combo. Maybe quadruped can confirm later?

Thanks for the positivity people. Nice thread this, the mix resulting in us talking about his musical works, love it. Cheers.
