Top places for vinyl mastering lacquers/ dubplates ?

Postby DubOrganic » Fri Jul 17, 2009 6:22 pm

Any opinions on the best places for cutting lacquers ? places doing good work on heavy dub/reggae cuts ? Looking for a place that knows the music and how it should sound on vinyl and relatively affordable. Located in USA / Canada would be nice for shipping factor. Any info is helpful. thanks

2 other options would be SAE mastering in Phoenix and Capitol records mastering here in LA.

Don One's machine has been broken for a very long time and anything he's doing right now he's doing at VP. It's very hard to say whether his machine will really be fixed in a month. But, Don One is a very good person to have take it to VP for you if you're going that route. He's been in the business a very long time & when his machine actually works he is probably the best option. And like with any of those machines you can cut dubs or do mastering - it's just that if you're mastering it gets sent onto the next place for plating

I'd advise checking Salt Mastering in Brooklyn - acetates or mastering.

Finding certain spare parts or people who really know how to fix those type machines can be very hard - I remember Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin were having to bring in a retired Neumann technician to fix their rig... almost no one left with the expertise, in the town where these machines were built in the first place....think about it..

If you burn up a cutter head for one of the Neumanns - there's almost no one on Earth who can rebuild them & to buy another will cost a small fortune if you can find one...

In the grand scheme of things this is extremely rare and arcane technology...
