Best Reggae Album Never Made?

Postby DrSuperlove » Sun Dec 05, 2004 9:20 pm

... has to be 1977's classic Black Ark production "Chant Chant Chant" featuring Winston Rodney & Joseph Hill on vocal duties and built around a core of 1976 hit singles "Natty Chanty Garvey", "Ethiopians Waan Chant", "Chantafari" and the crossover smash "Never Tired Fi Chant" that topped the UK singles chart again in 1992 when it was used in a Levis commercial

This one-off collaboration between a master and his apprentice suffered poor reviews upon its release as most critics found the vocal stylings highly sedative and dismissed the lyrics as "ridiculously simplistic", indeed the index of titles is also the complete lyrics sheet, nevertheless, "Chant Chant Chant" gained a strong cult following and is today universally acclaimed as a roots masterpiece second to none, arguably one of Lee Perry's finest productions and certainly the only one to sample the mating call of a water buffalo to great effect - to settle an old dispute, it is in fact not a real lion that was sampled in the title track, the roar was cunningly made using 2 sticks and a broken bottle somehow

The album was initially banned in America due to its explicitly homoerotic cover, nearly 30 years later this seems awkwardly bigotted and the pink tutu Winston Rodney wore is today a collector's item fetching six figures on the black market

i wouldn't class God In A Box as reggae Ekki, a listen to their classic The World According To God In A Box clearly shows them as some sort of early jungle/punk/squelchy acid house/space rock outfit that took way to many drugs than was good for them.

I actually like the rhythm under that tune quite a bit! Real shame about the vocals, though . . .
What about the half that's never been told?
