my current "murderer's row" and a question

Postby so nice » Thu Jan 20, 2005 5:10 pm

everton chambers "freedom door" (parish)

ruxy "earthquake" (gt)

teddy brown "baby don't do it" (diamond)

--

the last is of course a relick of the D. Brown masterpiece, which i love because of how the sweet arrangment and vocal delivery contrast the lyrics which sound nice but are tuff like metal...

my question is whether these are original D. Brown lyrics?

thanks!

i dont know d browns (nor t browns) "baby dont do it" but if it has lyrics like

baby dont do it
dont you break my heart
oh baby dont do it
dont break my heart
my biggest mistake was loving you too much
etc...

then its not an original d brown song, im not sure who wrote it but it may have been marvin gaye or at least him singing it. i know the band (dylans band) did a cracker version of it on, i think, the album rock of ages.

right, it's about how a woman would only be hurting herself by hurting him

does that sound right?

thanks

Two great songs here with the same title.

Dennis Brown wrote 'Baby Don't Do It' and it was released on 7" Mistic (JA).

Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote 'Baby Don't Do It' for Marvin Gaye. The Band did a live version of this one on 'Rock Of Ages' and re-titled the song 'Don't Do It'. Capitol records later released an edited Band version on a 7" single.

thanks pablo... just to be clear though, there's a clip of the D. Brown here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 4?v=glance

jb is this different from what you'd though of?

it's a short clip i know but the

"... even though i'd give you another chance

now i knoooooooooow..."

should be enough to recognize if this is the one or not

thanks!

for the many The Band fans out there, you can see and hear them sing Don't do It on The Last Waltz, but of you know that already

i cant listen to that clip but from your description and jackies post i would say most definately different songs.

now youve got me where you want me
and you wont let me go
if my heart was made of glass
then youd surely see
the heartache and misery
youve been causing me
oh baby dont do it
dont you break my heart

-more lyrics from memory of the marvin gaye song.

Everton Chambers is a wicked singer - is he still around? - I haven't heard of anything by him for the last few years.

Check these two more on Parish both killers -
What A Lick (1986)
Babylon You Wrong (1988)

hey tim

he recently (2002 maybe?) did a tune on Sam 7 label's 'terminator' riddim. i haven't gotten it out for awhile but remember it having some very strong and some not-as-strong parts to it.

thanks for the info on those other Parish cuts.. just recently sold another of his on same labe -- "Only God Knows"

does anyone know anything about Ruxy, that tune "Earthquake," the "GT" label or GT Thomas the producer of that tune?

thanks
