reggae story - Darryl Thompson 1st meets Sly & Robbie

Postby Chocolate Soldier » Wed Jan 19, 2005 3:12 pm

Related to me by Darryl Thompson, guitar man with Taxi gang,
He gets a call to audition for Peter Tosh back in the day,
imagine here's a young blues / rock guy from America 1st confronted with a room full of Jamaicans, Sly and Robbie etc...he's thinking whoah, where AM I? what the hell is this, can hardly understand the accent - he then notices half the guys are missing
their front teeth, JA style, and starts thinking to himself 'f*ckin' hell man - whats the deal? If you make a mistake around here do they smash your teeth out?'..He's feeling pretty scared now 4 real..
Robbie reels off 'Blues in A, Blues in G' etc..they riff for a bit..
All seems to be going ok,
Suddenly Robbie assertively calls out: 'GET UP STAND UP Mon'!
Darryl Thompson, who was seated on a chair - JUMPS UP to full attention scared sh*tless...all the other guys fall about laughing their heads off, wiping away tears, saying 'no man - its a song..'Get Up Stand Up'!
Needless to say he got the gig!...

Barry "White"
Reynolds I had a tape of his Island? LP. Really liked it.I remember the title of one song "No time for justice" which had the I Threes on backing vocals.
