As promised, we continue the theme started in the first 2 sets to complete this reggae flute triptych. The objective was to create a mix that could be listened to as a whole.
Almost all the songs played in this 3rd set have been edited to emphasize the flute parts and to fit in the 30 minutes mark.
The particularity of this part 3 is the featuring of a majority of cuts using a real flute solo, not just a little support to the melody. Cuts are hence played longer than on the 2 first parts.
Prepare yourself for a fluty trip, starting with a groundation (not the group huh), then passing by Jamaica, USA, Switzerland, France to end in the UK.Part 3 is right here :http://www.talawa.fr/media/echotone-reggae-flute-special-part-3-SllkZTracklisting :

Cymande - Zion I - Alaska 7 inches
We start this 3rd set by a nice UK made nyabinghi... Groundation time!
The wicked alto flute solo is by Michael "Bammie" Rose who played with Aswad (not related to the singer of Black Uhuru).
John Schroeder production from 1973.
Pablo Moses - Come Mek We Run - House Of Moses Records LP
We smoothly continue with this heavyweight downtempo reggae. The epic original song clocks at almost 10 minutes, so I shortened it to about 3 minutes to bring Tommy McCook’s solo to the fore, normally much further in the tune.
Geoffrey Chung production from 1975 found on Revolutionary Dream LP.
Sonny Washington - Black Skin Version - Black Skin The Prophet 7 inches
Sonny Washington aka Black Skin has not been very prolific, something like ten titles in all, but he is a true cornerstone of the deep roots style.
The B side of this classic holds many surprises with a flute and a furious master tape rewind.
Self production from 1977.
King Tubby's - Eternal Dub - Blood And Fire LP
Sylford Walker’s Eternal Day passes through King Tubby's hands for a fluted dub.
I first recorded this from a South East Music 10 inches assuming that a 45 rpm would be more dynamic than a 33 LP but it is not, thanks to a superb mastering from Kevin Metcalfe (Bloodandfire, Greensleeves ... if you do not know, get to know!)
Glen Brown production from 1975, to be found on the essential compilation Lamb's Bread International.
Vivian Jackson & The Prophets - Judgement On The Land - Blood And Fire LP
We can’t forget Yabby You for his mystical use of flute on tunes like Walls of Jerusalem or Death Trap. Here we play Judgement On The Land from the THE best reggae compilation of all time, the enormous Jesus Dread 4LP Box Set (hey, another Kevin Metcalfe mastering, a serious guy !).
Recorded at the Black Ark, mixed by Prince Jammy at Tubby's ... need I say more?
Yabby You production from 1977.
Leroy Sibbles - This World - Bullwackies Records 12 inches
We now leave Jamaica for the ‘merican style of reggae productions, here at Wackie's. The flute solo literally pierces this awesome sticky sound, not really a reggae, more of a crucial yard soul.
Lloyd Barnes production from 1982.
Wayne Jarrett - Bubble Up - LP's Wackie
Mickey Jarrett - By Klu Klan - Wackie's 12 inches
Azul - Rockfort Rock - Wackie's 12 inches
We continue with Wackie’s haunting sound with flautist Azul, also known as Clive Hunt.
I mixed the vocal, the deejay and the flute cuts of this wadded Rockfort Rock in the purest style of the label.
Lloyd Barnes production from 1982.
The Shades - Bottomless Pit Part II - Darker Shades Of Roots 7 inches
After a short flutapella transition, here is what’s happening in Helvetia : They have chocolate, watches, their legendary phlegm but also this natural deep roots reggae sound ! The output of this label its really impressive, imo this is the best in roots of the moment with their diehard analog approach. They keep the analog sound from the recording booth to your speakers (records cutting included), love it ! We clearly feel the influences of Perry and Pablo in the sound. Meditation time
Self production from 2010.
The Soul Agitators - A Holy Dub - KA Records 7 inches
We stay in Europe with a fluted side made in my town, Lyon, by my brethren KA records. This cut is to be found on the B-side of Earl Wonder’s Holy Place. As the previous cut, the analog recording adds strong vibes to the music. Big up local productions !
Self production from 2012.
Al Campbell - Wise Words - Tuff Scout 7 inches
After Jamaica, the USA, Switzerland and France, the last stop for the Flute World Tour is in the UK ! Sounds are more modern at the end of this set and here we have Al Campbell on a African Brothers recut (which they "forgot" to credit...).
Gil Gand & Jake Travis production from 2011.
Diggory Kenrick - Silicon Valley - Coptic Lion 7 inches
I end this set with Mr Diggory Kenrick riding an MT-40 style riddim made in Hackney at Bush Chemist’s. The flute part and its phaser effects are just excellent and make me take off each and every time I listen to this one.
Edmund "Mike" Brooks & Dougie Wardrop production from 2012.
I took great pleasure in preparing these 3 mixes, I will surely group the 3 + lots more in a forthcoming longer one. I will add the cuts were not featured here, some old favourites (Dinah, Death Trap, Blackborad Jungle, One More River, Marcus Garvey, Walls Of Jerusalem ...) but also UK style cuts from Jonah Dan, Dubkasm, Sound Iration ... There are 30 more cuts waiting to be mixed, creating a 60 tunes flute mix. Stay tuned to the Echotone Sound Station !
