Prince Far I Dub Recommendations

Postby Jonathan » Wed Oct 19, 2005 10:50 pm

This latest release (Silver and Gold) has got me thinking about Prince Far I in dub - a topic I don't know much about.

I've got Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Part 3, mainly because it's the Far I dub set recommended in the Rough Guide. It's a pretty cool, if somewhat unorthodox, dub set.

After doing some research on the Pressure Sounds site, it seems to me that the Silver and Gold set is sort of a vocal/dub followup to the Dub To Africa set, but: is it the same musicians (the so-called embryonic Roots Radics)? It seems like these Silver and Gold tracks were recorded right after the Dub To Africa set, if I understood the info at the Pressure Sounds site. I would suppose that's what makes these two releases previously unreleased "gold."

I've just listened to some samples of Dub To Africa and this seems like an amazing dub set that I somehow have overlooked. Is this the general concensus?

Additionally, I've just noticed on the Dub Directory that Cry Tuff Dub Encounter 2 was mixed by Jammy and this seems very intriguing. How does this set compare with the others?

And how about Prince Far I Dubwise? Do I understand correctly that this is 8 of the 9 tracks from Cry Tuff 2 with four bonus dub tracks (and 4 vocals.) Is this the set to get after Dub To Africa (which would appear to be in a class of it's own)?

Jonathan - you're right - the Virgin Dubwise compilation is Cry Tuff 2 plus some extras (didn't realise they'd dropped a track) - I like it - its more your usual dub than Cry Tuff 3.

In fact I'd say any of the Cry Tuffs are worth going for, my personal fave is 3, 'cus I like 'em strange but they're all good.

You used to be able to get no 1 on ROIR records and 4 was on Trojan. If I remember rightly Dubwise is only a few quid, in which case you can't go wrong picking that up, but my fave after 3 is probably 1.

Go on, go spend some money its nearly the weekend!

Cheers

>Prince Far I Dubwise

dont know the source of the other dub versions but these vocals and dubs are from the long lost "showcase inna suitcase" release on "pre" records:

01 Throw Away Your Gun Prince Far I
02 Throw Away Your Gun Dub Prince Far I
03 Love Devine Dub Prince Far I also known as 'Lover's Frock'
04 If You Want to Do Yah Dub Prince Far I aka 'Farm Drunk'
05 Jah Do That Dub Prince Far I
06 Jah Do That Prince Far I

here is an unofficial track list for showcase inna suitcase, note that some songs are renamed but i believe they are exactly as appear on the virgin release:

01 Throw Away Your Gun Prince Far I & Ashantie Roy
02 Buds Bush Roots Radics
03 How Love Devine Prince Far I & Wailing Souls
04 Lovers Rock Roots Radics
05 If You Want To Know Your Friend Prince Far I & Ashantie Roy
06 Farm Drunk Roots Radics
07 Can't Take Su Su Pon Dread Naggo Morris
08 Prince Far I Dub Roots Radics
09 Mighty Ruler Prince Far I & Naggo Morris
10 Jah Do That Roots Radics

one love

love these LP's .... in order I'd say:

(1) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 2 (front line)
(2) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 1 (hit run)
(3) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 3 (daddy kool)
(4) dub to africa (pressure sounds)
(5) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 4 (trojan)

chapter 4 is often overlooked but excellent atmospheric stuff with great sax on some tracks....

I love especially Cry Tuff Dub 1 & 2.
And also the handful of dub tracks from "Showcase ina Suitcase" that Virgin put out on the "Prince Far I Dubwise" cd.

I love em 2, Jay-b, but my LPs/CDs are from other labels:

(1) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 2 (I don't have this one, but most of the tracks appear on Frontline "Dubwise" CD)
(2) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 1 (Pressure Sounds)
(3) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 3 (Pressure Sounds)
(4) dub to africa (Pressure Sounds)
(5) cry tuff dub encounter chapter 4 (Trojan)

Don't forget "Jah Sunshine Thru" by Kenny Knots on Hydroponics label - excellent tune based on a sample from "Bendel Dub"...

I thought I was gonna be clever and say it's on the back of the "Put It Out" 7" released on the Pre label, but I just checked and it ain't (it's Congo Ashanti's "Big Shot")

Have you heard a version somewhere or do you just wish there was one?
