To be fair I think the Gaz Mayall, Mento Madness, and Wailing Souls at Channel One (together with Tree of Satta) - all of which were in my top five posted in another thread - were from the earlier part of the year. But I get the general point, Jah Bill. When Channel 4 (or BBC2) did their best music of the millennium at the end of 1999 it was won by Robbie Williams who saw off such lesser talents as Beethoven, the Beatles, Dylan, Smokey Robinson etc etc. Had the same poll been run 5 years earlier, it would surely have been won by Prince or Michael Jackson. As you say the more recent will tend to win. Which suggests to me that perhaps in order to allow the perspective of time we should be choosing the best record of 2003 in which case I might choose Junior Delgado Original Guerilla Music which has kept insisting on a turn on my player ever since. Or that Maytals anthology on Trojan, or Ja-Man Allstars (was that a 2003 release?) In the Dub Zone.
