Jackie Edwards

While I'm aware of Jackie Edwards, my parents had "Johnny Gunman", and "So Jah Say" and "Invasion" are a couple of my roots favourites, I don't really know much of his music. They played "Who Told You So" on the radio the other day and I thought wow, this guy is really good. How could he have passed me by with his huge catalogue going back to the 1960's?

Jackie Edwards is brilliant. I'm fully aware this isn't regarded as his golden era but the material he did with Bunny Lee in the early 80's has a lot of fantastic tunes (that Bunny Lee period in general I just love).

There's also his Bunny Lee version of Ali Baba.

Artist Biography by Steve Leggett (All Music Guide)

"Jackie Edwards has been called the Nat King Cole of Jamaica, and in many ways it is an apt description for this smooth and versatile singer, who was also a gifted songwriter. Born Wilfred Gerald Edwards in 1938, he was a star on the island by the late 1950s, when he was discovered by future Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who persuaded Edwards to relocate to the U.K. in 1962. Edwards had a huge talent, and although some critics have dismissed him as too smooth and sentimental (he was the original "cool ruler"), he recorded solid material in all of Jamaica's evolving musical modes, including ska, rocksteady, roots and lovers rock (a style for which his approach was clearly a prototype), but also made contributions in straight pop styles, even recording a marvelous gospel album. He wrote the first three chart hits for the Spencer Davis Group in the mid-1960s, including the classics "Keep on Running" and "Somebody Help Me," and his "Get Up" formed the compositional base for The Clash's "Revolution Rock." When Blackwell began steering his Island imprint more in the direction of rock in 1972, Edwards returned to Jamaica, where he recorded what is arguably his best work with producer Bunny Lee, who paired him with The Aggrovators. Somewhat forgotten today, possibly because he was more main- stream than the typical dreaded-out Jamaican singers of his era, Edwards was as versatile a performer (and as good a songwriter) as the island ever produced. He died on August 15, 1992 of a heart attack."

I have been trying to score King of the Ghetto for a reasonable price for nearly a decade now, no luck, have to stick with the remastered cd version done by a contributor here. I loved his style since I first saw him in Bunny Lees studio on that Channel 4 series Deep Roots Music a long time ago doing Sexy Sandy. More props to the member here for digging that out of C4's archives and getting it recognized for release.

Original cool ruler indeed. He even trades on that image by doing at least two Gregory cuts on that LP.

Those are the ones, Glasses. Some kool stuff right there. And I said bunny lee's studio, but that must be king tubbys studio, where they did the voicing of tracks. Such killer footage, I loved it from the first time I saw it. I would love to meet those two dawtas there too, especially the one with the sun glasses hanging from her blouse.

And i am reminded again, he wrote Keep On Running, a big hit for Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood. Hope he got paid good for that one.

the two daughters are Altea and Donna. I dont remember who is who, though
Althea Forrest had a son with Tyrone Downie, Andre, who is also an artist (writes and raps wicked little tunes)

I suspect that Jackie Edwards was eclipsed by Gregory Isaacs.

Is that really athela and donna? I thought they looked familiar but didn't put that together. Somehow it doesn't look like one half of that duo, but I will take your word for it. Makes sense they might be hanging out at Tubbys when the footage was filmed.

Top class vocalist and originator, much underated, just like Owen Gray!
Some of the best sides for Bunny Lee, imho. And one man who didn't really feel the urge to jump on the rasta bandwagon when most did!

Much as above really. My introduction to Ali Baba was the dub mix with Jackie's vocal on the Dub Chill Out CD and the Trojan Reggae Brothers box set finally got me the full song. It still pips the John Holt for me. Wonderful stuff.

King Tubby & The Aggrovators - I Trim The Barber
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N51xUOnPEYA

Jackie Edwards - Ali Baba
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYAcwdBcaaw

Keep On Running chugs along just lovely,

Jackie Edwards - Keep On Running
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CznVKCxPmg

I haven't found a dub for it yet though.

A lot of his stuff is a bit sweet/soft for my taste but then I fall for this,

Jackie Edwards - Sexy Sandy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLJ9QcJABV4

The way he sings sexy as zexy makes me smile :)

There's a no-vocal dub hidden on this CD, track 6,
https://www.discogs.com/Scientist-In-Th ... se/2246891

That period of Bunny Lee productions voiced & mixed at Tubby's is top notch.

Earlier stuff, I like this one for Island in 1965,

Jackie Edwards - Come On Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-OoqjuRkgY

I'm not a fan of '70's stringy mixes but the orchestration on that is fine by me.

Jackie Edwards - I Must Go Back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB1WgnZyvGk

Jackie Edwards - Come Back Girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6mk-zUg8mg

Jackie Edwards & Millie Small - Ooh, Ooh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lap8HjumHtc

Probably some duplicated links there but what the hey, it's great music.
