Michael Prophet - Poverty

Postby Novice » Tue Jun 26, 2018 9:23 pm

Was browsing Honestjons and came across this tune, don't think I'd heard it before but I really like Michael Prophet's voice and Ethiopian Kings is obviously a great rhythm but upon first listen, I can't say I fancy it. They don't seem to fit well together and I keep finding one competing with the other for space in my head/ears. Anyone else agree or is it just me and I should keep listening?

The tune formed part of Michaels live set and is a serious piece of music. I think the live version sounds more powerful and has more pace to it . Great tune though

I Shock - Jah Is Alive...search me, I can't find it anywhere to check it out.

I've listened to it some more, it's not that I can't enjoy the song, I can but it's still fukcing off. There are points in the song where the vocals and timing work, but then it seems to get off beat or timing or whatever the hell it's called, ask a musician/producer cause I don't know the technical terms. The begining "ahh aaa ahh aaa" I'm still not sure about, slightly incongruent to the beat but not completely. Then the first vocals come in and those sounds good and work off the rhythm well I think.

Basically here's the problem, the rhythm has a pronounced staccato-ish bass/drum pattern which dominates the sound so when Michael Prophet is singing in his style of stretched out words and phrases, the space between the sounds of the stretched out words and phrases allow the staccato sound to integrate with the vocals more smoothly and less jarringly and they don't seem to compete with each other. But then when he is coupling a bunch of words together to sing out a long phrase which itself has a staccato or stuttered sound it seems to not gel well with the rhythm because they seem to be bouncing against each other as opposed to in a complimentary fashion. There are times when he's singing the words almost to the same melody as the music but then switches slightly there by causing more sloppy sounding take.

Again, I can enjoy the song as I keep listening because sometimes these things can have their charm but I'd like to hear other's thoughts on it because that was my first impression.

Here's an example of a song that bothered(Can't recall if it was the chorus or just the whole thing) some and I was fully aware of their complaints and didn't necessarily disagree with them but still enjoyed the tune...

I prefer this version to Poverty: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UFFN2mvhLBw
"John Saw Them Coming" on the LP of the same name is good.

I don't think I said it was exactly the same rhythm but it's very similar.

This is one of my favourite album covers:

Yes you're right Ranking Glasses you didn't say that it was exactly the same. My mistake, I clearly misunderstood the way the thread was unraveling, what with everyone providing tunes and examples on the same rhythm I erroneously thought that this was intentional but can see now based on your post that it was entirely coincidental. Well played, allow me to follow suit....

And I prefer this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzMUV4y4XVM

I think I'm beginning to get the hang of how this is all supposed to work.

It's meant to be a link to something that doesn't have anything to do with the thread, it's just the first one I found.

You'll know when I'm being funny because you will die laughing.

You will also know when I am being sad because you will die laughing.

You know lipstick is meant to be a facsimile or approximation of how the lips of women look when they are engorged with blood during times when they are turned on or ovulating or some such thing. They wanted to put paint on their faces, like a clown, but not for our amusement but to basically trick us into believing something physiologically was going on that really wasn't because that's what draws in the male.

It's been hundreds of years and it still hasn't occurred to men to take a bunch of paint and draw an enormous penis pointing up, right under their belly buttons, because this would be an appropriate or effective method for drawing in a female mate...at least according to female logic?

See THAT is funny and sad at the same time....you may now die laughing!

Cheers
