really? What songs of TW are pop?

There you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZpeg8Lx87k

To be fair Black Slate, Inner Circle, BMWs, Matumbi, etc., also had pop hits.

I never really got into Steele Pulse. I was more of an Aswad man before they changed.

The In Crowd is a good one; nuff big tunes back in the day. Brown Sugar were also very popular in the UK.

What about the Twinkle Brothers? Not really my cup of tea but I know that other people love them.

I like the Itals but I'm not sure about the Top 20. Same goes for the Royals and the Royal Rasses.

OK, now you can remove all the singers/bands from your lists who made any "pop" song like that in their careers. Then let's see how many remain!

The groups in my list made a significant number of great authentic tunes over the years even though some of them had pop hits either by luck or by design. Third World sound like a load of wishy washy bollocks to me (apart from Dem Man Deh).

PS: what is your opinion about Inner Circle?

In all the decades I've been going to parties, clubs, dances and listening to reggae radio stations, I can't recall a single Third World record being played, not one ever.

Inner Circle made some classics with Jacob Miller but they've always had an "international" side to their work. I suppose it opens reggae to a wider audience. It's just not for me.

Does this prove that TW is a pop band?

I have been also going to parties, clubs, dances and listening to reggae radio stations for decades, and of course I have listened to TW many times ("Now That We Found Love" included). Remember TW's career started in 1972-73 (that makes a 45 years career).

I'm agree that, between the band's influences, you can find soul, funk, etc...(like Zap Pow...) but Stephen Cat Coore, William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke, etc...are great musicians in my REGGAE book.

Now tell me they are not playing reggae in 2014 (this thread is about Vocal Groups)

Ah! And don't forget to count me as well that UB40 cannot produce reggae! :D

It's your choice who you listen to. I've been listening to ska and reggae for 50 years and I know what I like but it's fine if you don't agree. The question is out of the 20 groups I listed who would you replace with TW & UB40? Burning Spear and the Abyssinian? Answer me question!

Its not who must be replaced or not. Its just that I didnt agree with your post telling that TW is a pop band, and I sent some arguments to prove it. That's all. With total respect, of course. :D

About the thread, "vocal group" is not the same as "reggae band" IMHO. What are you referring to?

Abyssinians is (was) a vocal group. Burning Spear a vocal group as well (til Winston Rodney took the name to release his records.)

This thread was originally called Top 20 Reggae Bands and then someone said it should be vocal groups so I changed it. I can't win!
