To be honest, I didn't get around to playing Til Shiloh until months after I bought it!

We'll have to agree to differ on Buju and Sizzla.

Dubba wrote:Not sure I could make a strong argument for top 20 given his limited discography but I love Sylford Walker. We all know he’s technically a poor singer but in terms of depth of feeling and grit he’s great as a roots singer for me. Lambs Bread International is one of my most played albums.

That's one of my favourite albums too. As well as his dodgy vocals I can often hear the original vocals in the background which is bloody annoying!

What about them?

DD was in a band with the Aces so he doesn't qualify.
Jimmy Cliff's early ska tunes and the Harder They Come era were great, as was Material World, but has there been much since?
As for Jackie Edwards, there was only 1 Cool Ruler for me! His cover of Burning Spear's Invasion was sublime though.
Ruddy Thomas has a lovely voice and sang some all time classics but he covered a lot of rock-steady tunes and lacked an edge. A bit like Sanchez, i.e. being mauled by a kitten.

Another suggestion is Larry Marshall, not as prolific as some but I love his delivery.

True but not sure he's Top 20 material. Who would you remove to put him in?

I'm surprised that no one questioned my inclusion of Bunny Wailer in the Top 20?

I think he would probably be in my 20. I did start to compile a list of mine but the "group" thing is a bit foggy for me. For instance, Slim Smith would be in my 20 but many if not most of his best tunes are with Technique/Uniques.

I wouldn't get hung up about the "group" thing if I were you - in some cases (the Aces, the Maytals, Burning Spear...), the other members functioned simply as backing singers and understandably tended to leave after a while. As I've suggested before, it might have been better to concentrate on male singers, but that's not where the thread started.
