I heard that Michael Prophet is very unwell with lung cancer. One of my favourite singers.

Heard that it is complicated by a brain tumor. Very sad news, all the best to the Prophet man.

That is very sad. Remember meeting Mikey as a 15 year old at my local record shop in Sheffield back in the 90’s, was a lovely guy and took some time out to have a chat with me after I told him how big a fan I was. Thoughts go out to Mikey and his loved ones :(

I just heard Michael Prophet just passed away, very short time after his diagnosis. Very sad, he was still quite young and certainly still had the voice. Rest in power, Prophet.

Hi Dubba.
What shop was it?
The only decent shop now is Record Collector at Broomhill.

Hi- It was the legendary Guiding Star Records in the heart of Pittsmoor run by Byron who was an absolute gentleman. I can recall Byron telling me that Mikey had a “babymother” who lived locally and hence used to visit regularly. He looked every inch the reggae star, draped in gold and with his Jaguar parked outside :D

I moved up to Leeds about 15 years ago so not really up on shops in Sheffield anymore. Back in the 90’s you had several specialist reggae shops including Guiding Star, Fox’s on Sharrow Lane and for a short while Unique below the Norfolk Park flats. I was always loyal to “puppa Byron”!They were good days. SCR was a great pirate station and DJ’s like Pauly D and Banton were heroes of mine. Brings back some wonderful memories. Sheffield had a really vibrant reggae scene/community in those times and for many years had the “ music in the sun” festival where you had artists the Calibre of Luciano, Freddie McGregor and Buju passing through. Halcyon days :D

Ironically I was living in Leeds in the 1990s and I used to like the August Bank Holiday carnival in Potternewton Park. Papa Levi, Gregory Isaacs, Macka B.
Never saw the Pitsmoor shop.
