Popular Tunes that are Hard to Find

Postby Ranking Glasses » Mon Sep 04, 2017 6:41 pm

There a quite a few tunes which are not particularly rare but either took me years to find or I never managed to find. Some key examples are:
Storm - Gregory Isaacs (Cash & Carry 7")
Better Must Come - Delroy Wilson (7")
Report to Me - Gregory Isaacs
Fret Not Yourself (C-F 12" and not the cut on Jimpy which has no bass!) Couldn't find this tune when it was new probably because the record shops kept the best tunes for their regulars and us youngsters didn't get a look in. Took me 20 years to find a decent copy.
Picture On the Wall - The Naturlites
Trickle Down - miscredited to Horace Andy

Any others?

Is there such a thing as Gregory Isaacs' "Storm" on Cash & Carry 7"? Maybe with a dub?

Ah, it was the LP Mr Isaacs which was on Cash & Carry and the single was on Progress I think.

I can imagine why that Natural ites tune is hard to find.. Several times in my country Holland in the past I found massive unsold stock copies of CSA 12 inches... . literally hundreds of mint copies in boxes (various titles)

They were pressed here in Holland (due to tax reasons) and supposed to be shipped back to the UK... (same story with Hit Run 12''es mostly pressed in Holland and shipped back to the UK)

I think something similar happened to that Natural Ites 12'' .. got pressed, someone didn't pay and it never got shipped back to the UK as
a result...

Why do so many people think that "heavy" equates to "good"?

A slight variation of this theme is finding common tunes in decent condition. I am still looking for a good copy of Tony Brevett's Don't Get Weary on Links, a hugely popular record, so popular that every copy seemingly was trashed to deat pon jukebox (my current copy certainly was).

Took me over 15 years to find a clean copy on Links! Was the only reggae record on an obscure Australian website.

Yes it is now, but it wasn't at the time. Don't think we had e-Bay in those days.

I can echo the sentiment of trying to find popular tunes but they always are beat up. I was searching for Pat Kelly's Bunny Lee/Yabby You cut of How Long. Took me quite some time to find a copy that was in EX condition, but the beat up copies were coming up all the time. Seen several nice quality copies since. But what a nice dub that is. Ranking Barnie in fine style!

The original on Gas (Pama) is also excellent but is even harder to find.

There's also a Pama 10" with the original Jamaican cut without strings.
