Damn! This is great. It was long since I last played the Main Source album but I used to love it. Perhaps it's common but I've never before heard a sample breakdown been done as a continuous mix blending both the samples and the actual sampling songs. A great way of doing it.

My 5 most listened hip-hop albums this last month:
  • Ice-T - O.G. Original Gangster (Sire/Rhyme $yndicate LP, 1991)
  • 2pac - All Eyes On Me (Interscope/Deathrow Records 2×CD, 1996)
  • DAS EFX - Straight Up Sewaside (Eastwest CD, 1993)
  • Poor Righteous Teachers - New World Order (Profile Records LP, 1996)
  • The DEEP - Parlayin' (Unleashed Records CD, 1997)

... and apparently Masta Ace is having a free live concert in Stockholm tonight (he's likely getting paid though ... so the arrangers are more likely to have the free concert). Perhaps today should be an all-out hiphop affair.

I produced a tune by Masta Ace for a Sly & Robbie funk and hip hop project but the song he recorded was so full of fuc! b!tches and s!ck that we scraped it
too bad because he is a darn good rapper

To bring the two together: I loved both Main Source's and Masta Ace's contributions to the Brand New Heavies album "Heavy Rhyme Experience: vol 1"! :D

Never heard that album. Will check it out but wasn't the Brand New Heavies like a pop/jazz/funk thing from the UK?

Kalcidis this is some UK street soul with some serious bars, these guys are the truth! If you like this go check their SoundCloud page, loads of other quality stuff on there.

jb: Dunno who the kid is. He's a quite known meme though and rather likely had there been social media when I was 12 I'd take similar pudgy gangsta photos. :) (I remember when my brother borrowed Blood In, Blood Out on VHS back then and the very next day I was wearing a shirt only buttoned at the top with a white tank top beneath. Didn't think of that my mom was working in my school that week. I was forbidden to see movies like that afterwards (but my brother also had CB4 on VHS which watched regardless when my parents weren't home -- those were the puppy gangsta days  )

Dubba: Thanks for that. Will check them out closer, the linked tune was very nice.

Jazz/funk band, yes. This album was a project where they collaborated with some of the best rappers of that time.
Here's the album, first track is Main Source:

Some great grooves on that album.

Jah Bill: Mom was right most of the times. :D Especially on that occasion. Dad on the other hand had bought me a Cypress Hill t-shirt where B-Real was holding up a spliff. I don't think he checked it too close before buying it to me.

Werner: Ah. A friend recommended the album as well. I used to be quite deep into hiphop and the years from 1988–1994 were my favourite era (or rather time-span) so happy to get a recommendation of an album from those days.

Since we're stupid cold rockin' I figured I'd share this fantastic early freestyle battle championship with Supernatural and Mad Skillz meeting in the finale. The video was uploaded by Mad Skillz and he has annotated all of his rounds in the comments (+ he's rather humble and objective about it which always is nice):

Anyone from Canada that knows of the Bomb Shelta Association by the way? A class mate had brought their only CD once (on CD-R) when I was in 8th grade and I absolutely loved it. Been low-key hunting it since but never actually seen a copy and the entry on Discogs shows no sales. Not even certain it actually exists a proper CD for it:

The vibe made think of a mix between Wu-Tang's and Company Flow's first albums (and very lo-fi).
