Records Store Day 2017

Postby John Eden » Wed Apr 05, 2017 12:55 pm

As usual these will be too expensive and I probably won't buy any of them, but here are the reggae releases for RSD UK 2017.

Congos, The - Heart Of The Congos (Original Mix)
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... ongos-the/

(What is the non-original mix? An abomination, I'm sure)

Creation Rebel - Starship Africa
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... ion-rebel/

Lion Vibes - Use Your Loaf Dub
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... ion-vibes/

(I assume this is related to that excellent "Cake Must Slice" 10" they did ages back? Probably worth checking if so. Assuming it's less than a hundred quid. Press release says " It is the first all new Jamaican recorded dub album to be released in 30 years." which simply isn't true, is it?)

Mungo's Hi Fi ft Johnny Clarke - Rain keeps falling

http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... ny-clarke/

(Given that they seem to have a new single out every other week I shall assume that this is a coincidence.)

Revolutionaries - Green Bay Dub
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... tionaries/

Trojan - Tighten Up Volume 2 (Picture Disc)
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... 17/trojan/

(All the old classic tunes on inferior sound quality picture disc. Of a naked woman - did we ever find out who she was?)

U-Roy - Dread In A Babylon

http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... 017/u-roy/

Various Artists: Soul Jazz Records Present (1) - STUDIO ONE Hi-Fi Special 7" Collectors Box Set
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... present-1/

(Tunes not listed but at least it doesn't come in a stupid box, eh?)

Various Artists: House of Joy - House Of Joy
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-releases/rsd-2017/various-artists-house-of-joy/

(In a stupid box that is supposed to be a soundsystem speaker. Also with a key ring, which as we all know Studio One collectors have been crying out for.)

Yabby You - Songs Of love and Unity
http://recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-r ... yabby-you/

(5 x 7" singles)

The non-original mix of heart of the congos would probably be the most excellent version released by the Beat on their go-feet label. I actually always liked this (the original, to me) better than the versions VP etc has released over the years.

Tighten Up: at least they could have centered the hole in her belly button. Another opportunity lost. But wait! There is a large size Trojan logo on the b side...perfect for posting above your condom stash.

Only one that really interests me is the yabby you set, complete with stupid box. But its hand silk screened, sure to be a collectors item! (Not...this silk screen business is so overplayed by now)

jah_vaults - as for your price estimates - this is already listed online for pre-order in some places for around 45-50 pounds. The SoulJazz studio one boxset shouldn't be any more than 50 pounds at the most seeing that the individual singles have been available from souljazz for a while at 10 pounds a pop. Apparently the 15 disc studio one box set is retailing at around 140-150 pounds.

I checked the US Record Store Day website and there is no Congos HOTC (Original Mix) That would be a grab for me. The U-Roy is crucial and hasn't been available on vinyl for decades (plus you get a poster, so that's an easy call for those that don't have it). As for the House of Joy, who wouldn't want that? The question is, who can afford it?

Also on the US website but not listed for UK is Mad Professor Meets Jah9 - In The Midst ofthe Storm.

Donovan, it looks like the Congos release might also be part of this "40th anniversary" 3-LP box set, due for release in May.

John, the original mix of the Congo's LP is just that - less spacey, no "cow" sounds and vocals, piano and percussion more to the front of the mix.
Is superb and I prefer it over the more well known mix issued by BAF etc...

I've got the original Black Art JA Congos mix (LP 4049 if memory services me correctly) - but would be happy to buy again if taken from the original tapes - which raises the question does anyone know?

Yes, the "original mix" is part of that, the rest of the content is probably identical to what was on the B&F (what I referenced above), plus a couple of extra tracks.

I don't think the B&F heart of the congos is the same as the go feet one...in fact I am sure of it. And I don't think either is the "original mix", though the B&F is probably closer than the Beat's release. Still, I prefer the go feet release in many ways, possibly nostalgia rather than reality based.

No, the B&F is not the "original mix", that first mix has never been reissued before this (it is quite different, a very straight mix without all the effects). There is only one other mix, but that remix exists in multiple versions, different edits (and other variations to the sound, but same basic mix). This new "40th Anniversary" will have both mixes of the album, and what I was trying to say is that I am assuming the second mix (the "regular" mix) will be the same edit (and possibly mastering) as what was on the B&F (and not for example the version on previous VP releases).

The go feet and the b&f mixes vary quite a bit, not just editing but also effects etc. Also, I swear someone, possibly VP, has issued what they called the "original mix" before and it did seem a lot different than the previous two issues, exactly as you say, more stripped down versions.

This has always been a big mess so excuse me if I am interpreting it incorrectly but this has always been one of my favorite reggae LPs so I was interested in getting the versions straight. At one point I got totally bored trying to get it correct and I could well still be confused.

Totally off that subject and to the issue of prices, I think it is completely ridiculous to pay ten pounds each for 7" records in box sets. But they are relying on the collectors market (is there really much value in reissue vinyl, as far as collectors are concerned?) and the currency of vinyl at the moment. Personally I will not be buying any of this stuff at those prices though the yabby you set is very tempting as are the Studio 1 releases, but at those prices I can survive without them.
