Record Stores - London, Paris & Stuttgart???

Postby adrians wall » Wed Mar 22, 2017 12:29 am

Heading over to London at the end of the week on a Dub Hunting mission & will be passing through Paris & Stuttgart for a couple of days as well.

Looking for fresh tunes and want to make sure I'm not missing anywhere I should be checking out. So Far I have found the following in London, can people confirm these are still open/worth visiting and recommend any others I may have missed?

Out on the Floor Records
Lion Vibes
SuperTone
Sounds of the Universe
Peckings
Reckless records
Zen Records
Massive International
Rat Records
Honest Jons
Soul Brother
Alans Records
Phonica

Does Dub Vendor have a shop any more or is it just mail order?

Any recommendations for places in Paris or Stuttgart?

For Paris try this one:

Patate Records
57 Rue de Charonne

Of course there are the bigs ones like FNAC (Forum des Halles) and Virgin (Champs Elysees)

Unfortunately most of the good shops like Blue Moon or Dub Wize closed down over the last couple of years.

You might even try Les Puces de St. Ouen (Porte de Clignancourt) a big flea market in the North of Paris.

Music & Video Exchange - Notting Hill Gate and Greenwich.

Whilst in Greenwich there is also Calabash/Beehive just around the corner and sometimes stalls in the indoor market and the weekend markets along the High Road. There used to be a great shop for crate rummaging in Lee High Road in nearby Lewisham run by an old Irish bloke, but haven't been there for years so don't know if it still exists.

Also Flashack records in Shoreditch, Islington and Crouch End. Cosmos records on Hackney Road has a small but good selection of reggae/dub vinyl.

In Paris, Virgin no longer exists - like the other chain stores. I don't think FNAC is worth it nowadays, maybe the ones in Montparnasse and Les Halles for the biggest labels (i doubt it, though).
I'd advise Patate too and, very close, Le Silence de la Rue, which is not a specialist shop but stocks a fair share of reggae and many other goodies in different genres at very decent prices. They can't be beat locally. They are near Bastille.
As for stalls in les Puces de Clignancourt (north - line 4), only open on saturdays and sundays, mainly a hit or miss affair. Most interesting ones are in the Marché Dauphine.
As for London, be careful with Peckings opening hours/ days, never been lucky with that one !

depends on what you would like to buy offcourse.. some shops only sell new pressed records.. which can be bought on in any online shop..

Sounds of the universe sells mainly new repressing.. there are one or 2 tiny boxes with second hand material... some story with phonica. Supertone has a lot of new pressings also , also a lot of 90s and 2000 stuff.. don't look for old second hand material because that stuff is gone for years now.. People turned to place inside out for that.. you might bump into some old school artists who live in london there though. that's pretty cool

I've had bad experiences with rat records... they ask for a deposit (!) to listen to a record and if you don't buy the record they don't want to give you back the 10 pound deposit... that soort of cheeky things..

There is a really nice shop in hackney/dalston that has large amounts of old material.. and all sort of exotic records from Africa, the carribean etc.. It's called eldica: http://www.eldica.co.uk

massive is oke, but they charge high prices for just very common records.. also keep in mind that that shop owner closes the shops whenever he likes.. it's not like it's open from 9 to 5 every day.. If he has something else to do on a a particular day it's simply closed without any further notification... sometimes 3 or 4 days in a row..

Also in london it's very hard to find dub records besides the common ones that have been repressed over and over again (king tubby meets xxxx) if that is what you are referring too..that stuff ends up for sale on ebay very quickly.. Best shots for those kind of things are flea markets, open markets in greater london area, some street vendors in outer london etc etc.. You have a lot more chance to find those kind of things or other odd quirky records in Amsterdam.

At least when I was there last year for the last time there was nothing but dusty junk left... There is another one a bit further down in Lee.. above a sort of abandoned derailed shopping center.. the floor is cracking because of the amount of boxes stored there... (along with all sort of other stuff like life size comic figures and bicycles) very little reggae there though, found a few crackling dubplates in a suitcase there but that was about it... This guy also has thousands of comic books. Have to be careful there as a lot of drug dealers drunks and shady people hang around that particular area. you don't want to get robbed. http://www.galliardhomes.com/investor-i ... te-centre-

Also, a bit out of the way, is Soul Brother Records, almost adjacent to East Putney tube station. As the name suggests they specialise in new and used soul, funk and jazz records and CD's but they do have a (small) selection of new and used reggae. The shop is small, does mostly mail order and you have to ask to see the reggae as there isn't much room out front. Last year when I turned up there were several cardboard boxes on the floor that had just arrived and rummaged through them to be rewarded by a few 12" 45 gems. If you're in the area it's well worth checking out as you might get a pleasant surprise, but don't expect to pay peanuts as the guy knows his stuff.

Dub Vendor has a shop in the Mau Mau bar on Portobello Road, just down the road from Honest Jons. Also around that area is People's Sound Records and Rough Trade which has some good reggae down in the basement.

Nice one guys, thanks for all the info. I'm looking for new stuff/cheap 2nd hand bits, not interested in $50+ second hand records.

Looking forward to having a dig

50$ is still cheap.. I saw that 8 years ago already... rare 7 inches prices 100 to 200 pound each hanging on the walls at some shops...for example at flashback records.. nothing wrong with that imo, but just to give an idea

not even talking about some rare rock and jazz records that you see for sale in some stores.. there is one nice store near soho.. forgot to name.. but they have like these odd records for 5/6/700 each sometimes..in berwick street if I remember well. first mint pressings from the beatles and led zeppelin and things like that.

Have had a great time digging, thanks to everyone for the links, best places for me so far were Pure Vinyl in Brixton & Out on the Floor in Camden, great staff who took to the time to show me the stuff I wanted and cool places to hang out.
