I'll take a melody and see what I can do about it

Postby Ranking Glasses » Tue Mar 07, 2017 7:34 am

No this isn't about one of my least favourite John Holt songs as the title would suggest. It's about how fun it is trying to guess the songs / melodies used in DJ tunes. For example, Wear You Size by Lt. Stitchie is Downtown by Petula Clarke, Everybody Need Somebody by Capleton is featured in the film The Blues Brothers.

Can you think of any?

RG, Stitchie's wicked "Nice Girl" borrows from Petula's "Downtown", "Wear You Size" doesn't.

Yellowman borrows "I'm Getting Married from the musical "My Fair Lady". Prince Jazzbo and Chakademus both borrow from Amos Milburn's "One Scotch" (even though "bourbon" became "burgerman" somewhere along the way). There are many.

I think yellowman used that first and also changed "one scotch" to "one schnapps", one schnapps one burgerman one beer. and I am thinking "burgerman" is actually something else referring to a brand of beer or wine or something.

There are a ton of these examples even though its too early here for me to think of more, many of them sound like the artist was not really familiar with the original lyrics and was flying by the seat of their pants, making it up as they go.

Then there is how many times have Beatles melodies been appropriated by reggae artists...one good example is the melody to Norwegian Wood.

one love

Oh and Elephant Man's "Elephant Message" on the Diwali riddim has the same melody as "99 Red Balloons" by Nena.

There's loads, surely?

Shame, I never connected Twice My Age with that song but now that you say it. There's a bad man tune by Bounty Killer I think which uses Puppet on a String. Anyone know the song?

It redefines "twisted" to turn a nice old song into this rubbish. At least we now know that bad man Bounty Killer listens to Sandie Shaw in his spare time!

Colin Roach's 'Champion Sound' for Jammys (1986) takes its melody from 'Ain't nobody here but us chickens' by Louis Jordan (1947).

If I recall Elephant Man did a few at the time - another was Fan Dem Off on the Gallop which was based on Eye of the Tiger

Some weeks ago I found out that Cocoa Tea borrowed the melody from another song for "Hey Bobby", but forgot which song.

Anyone ?

Yes, I think the melody for Hey Bobby is based on Charlene's 'Never been to me.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZgIk2b68gQ

Which reminds me, Cocoa Tea's Come again takes it's melody from the much versioned Santa Claus is coming to town.
