King Jammy compilations

Postby danielmak » Wed Nov 30, 2016 8:27 pm

I know this is a long shot but I'll try anyway. There is a flood of Jammy compilations that have been released in the past couple years that add to some of the comps that came out within the past decade, such as Total Recall. Has anyone done any kind of comparison among these comps to figure out the best buys to avoid duplicate songs? Although I prefer CD to LP, any kind of comparison would be nice.

As far as his digital stuff goes, VP released a series of 2cd sets (4 volumes I think) called Selectors Choice which was a pretty comprehensive overview. I know that doesn't specifically answer your question, but if you want to go with one comp and are a completist, this would be a good choice

The Selecter's Choice sets are excellent, and for his earlier roots material, Roots Reality and Sleng Teng (North Parade) would be a very good choice.

I have two conflicting problems: My vinyl buying days ended a long time ago when I started moving fairly regularly and it was too costly to move the LPs and I am a bit of a completist. I had some extra time tonight so I put Excel to use and have compared most of the releases. Of course, the most overlap comes from VP, who seems to churn out a new Jammy set each month. I'm hoping to have some time later in the week to compare what's on these comps to what's on solo CD releases from the artists featured on the comps. For example, many of the Pinchers and Leroy Gibbons appear on the joint SuperPower CD. Anyway, I appreciate the responses. I'll share the Excel sheet when I finish just in case anyone cares.

FYI, one of the interesting features of the Dub Store comp is that there is a second CD of dubs, not that digital dub compares favorably to the pre-digital days when it comes to dub. Still, that's an interesting addition.

Oh, for these releases I'm more interested in the dancehall stuff than the roots stuff since I might have many of the roots tracks on other CDs.

Here's what I have on Jammy compilations:

VP / Greensleeves:
Jammy$ From The Roots (1977-1985)
More Jammy$ From The Roots
Reggeae Anthology: Roots Reality and Sleng Teng

RAS / Mélodie:
A Man And His Music, Vol 1 (Roots & Harmony Style), Vol 2 (Computer Style) & Vol 3 (Hits Style)

Auralux:
King Jammy In Roots

Pressure Sounds / Maximum Pressure:
The Crowning Of Prince Jammy
The Rhythm King - 18 Dancehall Classics

Dub Store:
King Jammy’s Dancehall 1985-1989 Part 1

I don't know about too many besides these, and the mentioned Selectors Choice series, so I wouldn't call it a "flood". What other recent ones are there?

It seems that many of the Jammy's releases on VP have come out in the last year or so, hence the term "flood." I missed a few that were on your list so will check those out. In addition to what you listed there is also:

King At The Controls (Essential Hits From Reggae's Digital Revolution 1985-1989) (VP)

So there are 5-6 from VP/Greensleeves in the past 12-18 months plus Dub Store. That's quite a bit in a short period of time, especially with many featuring the same songs. Again, it's odd to me that VP would not try to create unique releases.

Those VP sets, I would check to make sure they have a decent sound, especially the bass end. Many of their cds, in particular, don't seem to have much weight in the bottom end. To my memory those RAS collections sounded really great and I am guessing the Dub Store releases probably are excellent fidelity. I have been very disappointed in just about every VP release I have bought, even when I bought them on vinyl. Same with Greensleeves, though to a lesser degree, and of course they are controlled by VP these days.

I really like the Pressure Sounds releases too.

Not really, only Roots Reality And Sleng Teng and More Jammy$ From The Roots came out in the last couple of years, the others are five years old or more. I haven't compared in detail, but I would say that except for Roots Reality And Sleng Teng and the one you mentioned, King At The Controls, which both are supposed to be career retrospectives (and which both include the same DVD), the compilations don't have that much overlap with each other.

I haven't added the CDs that mghifi just posted, which look good. Here is a link to the Excel sheet I made for the bulk of the releases mentioned in this thread. All are CDs. (FYI, no macros were used so the sheet is safe in terms of viruses, which I guess can be a problem with macros.)

I did not have time to go through and look at full length CDs from individual artists to see which tracks were on the artists' releases, which I always prefer to compilation. I started to do this but got busy with other things.

mghifi came up with the ones I have somewhere that I was trying to think of. Those six cds are a good selection and good sound. I need to dig them out and listen to them again. I especially love the Leroy Gibbons tracks on there.

off the subject but right now specials aka are on a bleedin TV commercial for Kaiser Permanente medical group here (USA). A message to you rudy. Cant believe it...this is pretty unprecedented and only about 40 years late.

Aren't those Revenge Of King Jammy's collections megamixes? (As in: all of the songs cross fade together into one continuous mix). I remember getting the first volume and being dismayed about that.

Hold tight, I heard through the grapevine that Dub Store will soon be releasing some more Jammy's from the vault tapes.

now that you mention it mick, I believe you are correct. Kind of throws them out of consideration for a lot of people.

Can anyone check to see if these are mix CDs or if tracks are distinct. Those CDs are good deals since they apparently combine 2 CDs for each volume that are normally available separately via Alpha Enterprise JPN. It's a better deal to get 2 on 1 set versus buying each CD on its own.
