OT: Off-Genre to be more precise..Killer vibes to these ears

Postby Novice » Sat Aug 06, 2016 12:58 am

I don't often see other genres referenced, recommended or rallied around here, which I find a bit queer considering reggae is the king molester of any and all styles of inspiration... but I suppose not everyone wants to see their meat butchered, just cooked and seasoned properly. So here's a Latin dish some of you more adventurous types might enjoy, if not for the sounds than perhaps for the wicked vibes...

https://youtu.be/aP-5cq5b154?t=400

There are three songs performed, the second(La Cucharita) is the one I'm referencing. For those of you who make it all the way through the song check out the man WAIL his guts out at the 9:45 mark for about 25 seconds or so...LOVELY!

Incidentally, this live version is different version to the album one, which I bought off the strength of this performance. The old man is not present on the album version but instead there is a female vocal singing the chorus. The album version is not nearly as raw or tough as the live version but the effects used and the woman's voice adds a more dreamy/haunting vibe to it which makes a for a nice alternative depending what type of mood you might be. Here's a link below for that:

I doubt most people even opened this thread but I hope those who did enjoy it and give it a chance to maybe get some flavor out of it!

Cheers!

Great stuff. I usually don't like slide guitar because of how it's used in country music, but that guy has the touch. The lead singer doesn't let up.

Heres my contribution! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psGQlzbpUl0

Drone Ambient artist from B.C. Canada. Been releasing killer stuff the past 3 years.

Interesting choice of words there Donovan, I can't say I've ever heard anyone use the term "killer" to describe ambient music. Your particular clip was not to my tastes but that could be a combination of having too little time to actually chill out long enough to get down or my general impatience. However, even when I listen to more electronic music in the past, I preferred my ambient to be not quite so minimal and have a bit more going on or have some more melodies or "notes" at least. In the right state of mind though I could enjoy it but it wasn't something I could put on at anytime and get in to it.

I like where your heads at though, from Latin to Ambient...why not!

Here's a couple of examples of what I got down with back then...

Incidentally, I'm not sure what your musical knowledge consists of when it comes to electronic/ambient/etc music but it's been my experience that much of what has come out in the last 5-10 years(Based a very small sample of what I've actually heard) just seems like either copies of what has come in the past or poor imitations of it or a combination of the two. The people who are producing this music seem to have struck upon a bit of good fortune in that there is a new generation of listeners and their knowledge of past music of the same genre is either VERY limited or non-existent so the producers can just flog their carbon copies unchecked by people who know better because they are too old to care or have an audience too stupid to care.

Not just too stupid to care mind you...too stupid to have a proper good time...don't know about Europe but this type of care-free fun is all but EXTINCT in the U.S. https://youtu.be/eRpMctqzVOI?t=3 and I don't mean just at raves or clubs I mean in general.

I see a lot of views but not comments or contributions...come on lads, share your treasures!

HaHa, that's true. A better way of putting it - That dude just keeps putting out one sedative after another! :D

I've been getting into drone music for about 3-4 years. So far the best I've come across is Stars Of The Lid.

I miss the days of quality magazines with quality writing (like The Beat) which would keep me abreast of reggae while also introducing me to great artists from around the world. Yes the internet is great, but it needs an editor. :?

Personally I'm obsessing over this kind of music recently:

The producer met up with a romani beggar who came from Rumania and recorded him singing romani wedding music over his own digital synth production. So much good music out there.

Sergio Mendoza y La Orkestra, which I agree is pretty killer stuff, has a new album dropping in a week or so. This is a single from it, actually has a bit of a reggae vibe to it... a bit reminiscent of the cool On U Sound Dub de Gaita project

Enjoyed your recommandations !
Been pretty hooked on that Brazilian band for a few years : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzkSncB912A
And they even have a recent dub album mixed by contemporary dubmaster Victor Rice - not a name often read about on reggae websites/forums, unfortunately !
Older tune dubbed by him : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLhzrtEd9o0
